19 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, March 25, 2009 A clean machine is about more than looking good When it comes to caring for your vehicle, there is nothing quite so satisfying as cleaning, washing and polishing your car at winter's end. Beyond returning your car to its former glory after months of harsh winter conditions, giving a vehicle a good thorough cleaning at this time of year will go a long way toward eliminating hazards that can be distracting and dangerous while driving. As with many aspects of car care, there is a right way and a wrong way to clean, wash and polish your vehicle. Car Care Canada spokesperson and race car driver, Kelly Williams, recommends the following step-bystep approach for the best results: · When cleaning the car, approach the inside first, and follow with the outside. Remove all trash, vacuum the inside, and clean the windows. · When washing the outside, be sure to include the tires, wheels, underside and fenders to eliminate any road salt or grime. Wheels and tires should be cleaned with a separate mitt. · Always wash the vehicle in the shade to avoid streaks, and use a product sold specifically for cars to protect your paint's finish. · The car should get a final rinse by letting water cascade down the surfaces of the vehicle. To avoid water spots, use a chamois or another product made specifically for drying. · Time permitting; you may also want to wax the car according to the manufacturer's instruction.
