Petford, a three-time OFSAA gold medalist, easily won both her individual events and helped two Oakville Trafalgar relay teams claim gold at the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference high school swimming championships in Hamilton Wednesday. The Grade 11 student won the senior girls' 100-metre backstroke in one minute, 14.45 seconds, beating her nearest rival by more than three seconds. Petford followed that up by taking the 100m individual medley in 1:17.20, this time by a 4.31-second margin. She completed a solid-gold day by leading the senior girls' 4x50m medley and freestyle relay teams to victory. Shauna Moore and Adrienne Joaquim were members of both teams while Jennifer Hall and Samantha Mehltretter were on the medley team and Gwen Scott and Jessica Bryce rounded out the winning freestyle team. Also posting two convincing victories in her individual events was Armstrong. She won both the junior girls 100m IM (1:17.54) and 50m breaststroke (37.43) by more than four seconds each. She duplicated Petford's four-gold medal performance by contributing to a Red Devils' relay wins in the open girls' 4x50m medley and 4x100 freestyle. OT's Moore, a member to the two relay gold medal teams, added an individual gold in the senior girls' 100m breaststroke and a silver in the 50m freestyle. Calum MacKay of Abbey Park won the junior boys' 50m backstroke and earned a bronze in the 100m freestyle. Other individual gold medalists included Bryn Johnson of Abbey Park, who won the senior boys' 50m freestyle by nine one-hundredths of a second. Johnson, along with Brett Jones, Isaac Eagle-Bell, Michael Bowering, Scott Dunford and Evan Jones, took first in the senior boys' 4x50m freestyle relay. Titans, Hawks seek berths in senior boys' basketball final The Holy Trinity Titans and Loyola Hawks are one win away from the Halton high school senior boys' AAA/AAAA basketball final. HIGH SCHOOLSPORTS The Titans, two-time defending regional champions, advanced to the semifinal round with a 60-46 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Wednesday at Trinity, while the Hawks defeated the Georgetown Rebels 59-51 at Loyola. The Assumption Crusaders knocked off the M.M. Robinson Rams 89-42 and the Nelson Lords downed the Abbey Park Eagles 85-34 in Wednesday's other quarter-final games. Those results set up semifinal matchups of Trinity at Nelson and Loyola at Assumption, both of which will be contested today (Friday). The Titans and Lords will tip off at 3:30 p.m., while the Hawks/Crusaders clash is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Both semifinal games promise to be competitive. Trinity defeated the Lords on a last-second basket by Malcolm Fischer two weeks ago in regular-season play, and Assumption --- the lone undefeated team in AAA/AAAA -- edged Loyola by one point in the recent provincial Catholic championships. "We were just looking towards Nelson," Trinity's Jordan Catterall said Wednesday after scoring 20 points against Notre Dame. "We have to beat Nelson to get back to the championship, to try and three-peat." Jordan Clarke had 17 points, Fischer scored 11 and Troy Stevenson netted seven Wednesday for the Titans, who prevailed despite struggling from the field. "We played an off-game and missed a lot of shots," said Catterall. "That won't happen again." Oakville is already guaranteed one representative in the senior A/AA final, with the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders and King's Christian Collegiate Cavaliers slated to meet in today's semifinals. Aquinas defeated the White Oaks Wildcats 73-32 and King's, the defending A/AA champ, downed the Burlington Central Trojans 56-63 in Wednesday's quarter-finals. The Raiders and Cavs will tip off at Aquinas at 3:30 p.m. The Aldershot Lions and Milton District Mustangs are the other semifinal matchup. Halton basketball finals will be played Wednesday at Sheridan College, with four championships to be decided (senior A/AA and AAA/AAAA, junior A/AA and AAA/AAAA). In junior AAA/AAAA playoff action, Holy Trinity and the Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers will meet today for a berth in the final. Iroquois Ridge will host the semifinal game at 3:30 p.m. Nelson will visit Notre Dame in the other semifinal, also at 3:30 p.m. Trinity defeated the Bishop Reding Royals 59-47 and Iroquois Ridge cruised past Loyola 69-50 in the quarter-finals Wednesday. KCC, which downed Burlington Central 61-37 in Wednesday's quarter-final round, will be home to the Corpus Christi Longhorns in the semifinals today, while Aquinas -- a 37-35 winner over White Oaks Wednesday -- will travel to Burlington to play the Lester B. Both games are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. Girls' volleyball Perennial Halton volleyball finalists, Oakville Trafalgar and Georgetown appear once again to be on a collision course. The Red Devils and Rebels are both through to the semifinals in senior girls' AAA/AAAA playoffs, following quarter-final victories Wednesday. OT swept aside Abbey Park 2-0, with Georgetown doing the same to M.M. Robinson. The Red Devils will host a semifinal game Tuesday, with their opponent yet to be determined after the Notre Dame/White Oaks game was postponed to Monday. In senior A/AA play, Aquinas will be home to the Acton Bearcats Monday in the semifinal round. The Raiders knocked off the Robert Bateman Wild in the quarter-finals. Junior AAA/AAAA semifinals will include Loyola and Trinity. The Hawks will visit Georgetown Tuesday and the Titans will travel to Nelson, with both games slated for 3:30 p.m. starts.
