There are two separate pieces of land, both of which are currently green space, for sale on the site adjacent to the north campus building. "There are actually two areas we looked at," said Gerry Cullen, superintendent of facility services with the school board. "One is on the east side of the existing White Oaks north school building and parking lot, so it is adjacent to a tree line and group of townhouses in that area. There's another section of land that is immediately north of the facility that is identified as surplus to the needs of the current campus use." The east portion of land is about three acres in size, while the parcel north of the building is roughly seven acres in size. Sports fields occupy the majority of the larger piece of land. "The two schools have been twinned administratively, so you do have one administrative team with two locations for classes and programs," Cullen said. "For the most part, there's now one football team, one soccer team, so having the sports fields that are affil- iated with the south campus of the current White Oaks High School would meet most of those needs. Some of (the land) is sports fields, but they have been identified more for community use aspect than school need at this time." The first step in the sale of the property is assessing how much the land is worth. Once that has been decided, provincial regulations governing the disposition of school property determine who will have the first opportunity to purchase the land. Among the list of preferred buyers is the Town of Oakville. Once the official sale starts, buyers from that list will have 90 days to make an offer. There is also the opportunity to ask the board for an extension. Cullen said talks would likely have to be made regarding boundary lines for the sevenacre parcel of land at White Oaks depending on who is interested in purchasing it and what it would be used for. Proceeds from the sale of the surplus properties go back into the school board's coffers to pay for new school construction.
