Representatives from Tofino Developments pitched their shopping plaza proposal to a recent Oakville Planning and Development Council. Tofino Developments is asking for the area to be rezoned to permit the establishment of seven commercial and retail buildings. The proposed shopping centre would see these buildings used to house a grocery store, a bank, a restaurant and other commercial and retail institutions. "The site is generally organized in a fashion that preserves the three existing entrances that are on the site today. The centre of which will be retained as a signalized intersection," said Heinz Vogt, architect for Tofino. "So we are generally retaining the traffic movements on Cornwall Road to accommodate the shopping centre." Vogt said the proposed elevation of the buildings is intended to create a town atmosphere and would be similar to those already found on Cornwall Road. After the developer's presenta- tion, councillors expressed a number of concerns about the development. Ward 3 Councillor Mary Chapin said a lot of traffic runs along Cornwall Road and requested assurances that Tofino is prepared to pay for the widening of Cornwall Road and additional turning lanes into the shopping centre. "That is my understanding," said Vogt. Chapin also asked the developers to explain the economics behind their plan, since the anchor tenant for the shopping centre would be a grocery store and there are already several big box food stores in the vicinity. "Is there sufficient business to put a food store here," she asked. "The last thing I want is for that building to remain empty." The developers said a marketing study concluded the market could safely absorb another food store in that area. Ward 4 Councillor Roger Lapworth expressed concerns about the impact the development would have on the Oakville and District Humane Society, adjacent to the proposed development. Lapworth said the loading docks for the development will be located next to the dog pens. He said existing bylaws prohibiting loading in the early morning and late evening hours would have to be observed. "The area may not be residential for humans, but it is for animals," he said. The Halton District School Board currently uses a notification system in secondary schools mainly for attendance purposes. The new notification system will be extended for use in elementary school communication, using the same technology, but with the capability of contacting parents/guardians at a faster rate. The system is capable of notifying parents and students, by phone and e-mail, of important Board-wide announcements such as transportation cancellations, school closures, and emergency situations. The system will also be utilized by individual schools for communicating specific announcements, events or urgent information concerning their school community. To ensure the home notification system is effective, the Halton District School Board will conduct a brief telephone survey of all parents. This two-question survey will verify parent contact information and allow parents the choice of taking part in the Home Notification System.
