8- The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday November 29, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Library welcomes new Canadians to Oakville T he Town of Oakville, with its vision to be the `most livable town in Canada' is fast attracting many newcomers to this wonderful country. Arriving in a new community with little knowledge of the facilities and services offered, let alone the help and support of family or friends, can be daunting. However, this is the scenario for thousands of newcomers to Oakville every year trying to settle into their new neighbourhood. It is estimated that there were more than 10,000 new residents to Oakville in the year 2007 and this number is rising. The Oakville Public Library (OPL) endeavors to make each of its branches a welcoming and informative place for new residents and their families. Whether you sign up for our seasonal adults or children's programs, check-out a book or music for some R&R, or want to download an audio book for that long business trip, OPL is for you. To make New Canadians feel even more welcome, this week sees the launch of the library's Welcome to Canada areas. Funded by The Community Foundation of Oakville, United Way of Oakville and R.E.A.C.H. Legacy Fund, the Welcome to Canada areas are located in each branch and provide newcomers to our community with vital information and resources to connect and make Oakville their new home. To officially launch the Welcome to Canada areas, Oakville Public Library in partnership with Halton Multicultural Council (HMC) hosted a Canadian Citizenship Ceremony on NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER PROUD NEW CANADIAN: Six-year-old Arda Aktas sings O Canada for the first time as a Canadian citizen during the Canadian Citizenship ceremony at the Oakville Central Library on Thursday.
