www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 5, 2008 - 27 Eagles, Hawks pull off basketball first-round stunners Home-court advantage didn't prove beneficial for either of the top two Poliziani Division teams in the opening round of the Halton high school senior girls' Division 1 basketball playoffs. Both the Holy Trinity Titans (12-1) and Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils (9-4) were upset on their home floor in quarter-final action Friday. The Abbey Park Eagles stunned the Titans 44-43, while OT fell 34-27 to the Loyola Hawks. Abbey Park and Loyola were both in action again yesterday (Tuesday), hoping to earn berths in tomorrow's (Thursday's) Halton final at Sheridan College. Results of those semifinal contests were not available at press time. The Eagles' Kayla Goodhoofd scored the decisive point in the win over Trinity, draining a free throw with eight seconds left. The Titans turned the ball over on their subsequent possession. Goodhoofd finished the game with 17 points, while Erin Tilley added 14 for the Eagles. Doreen Bonsu countered with a game-high 19 points for Trinity, which reached the Halton final last year. "We didn't play a bad game as much as little mistakes cost us," said Titans coach Andrew Saulez. "Kayla Goodhoofd was unbelievable, they hit a lot of outside shots and we were very bad on our (defensive rebounding)." Trinity managed its regular-season success despite being a young team, meaning the Titans will only lose two core players -- Lauren Morris and Katie Sinopoli -- next year and hope to again challenge for a regional title. At Oakville Trafalgar, recent transfer student Kayla McFarlane had 13 rebounds (including seven offensive boards) and eight points to spark the Hawks. Marti Killeen added eight points and eight rebounds, Nicole Garcia scored a team-high 11 points and Ashara Cadogan drained two three-pointers for Loyola, which led 19-13 at halftime and 24-19 after three quarters. The Red Devils narrowed Loyola's lead to as little as three points in the fourth quarter before two of their starters fouled out. The junior Division 1 semifinals were also played yesterday, with Trinity visiting the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and OT hosting the Georgetown Rebels. Division 2 basketball The St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders advanced to tomorrow's senior Division 2 championship game by surprising the Burlington Central Trojans 42-39 Monday in Burlington. Melanie Enright scored 12 points to lead the Raiders, who will face the Milton District Mustangs in the final. HIGH SCHOOLSPORTS In junior, the White Oaks Wildcats will look to conclude an undefeated season when they meet up with the Corpus Christi Longhorns in tomorrow's Division 2 final (a 12:30 p.m. start, according to the Halton Secondary Schools Athletic Association website). The Wildcats used a balanced scoring effort from starters Mira Krunic, Kaminda Musumbulwa, Ellie Hannaford, Lana Marcy and Nevena Aksin to pound Burlington Central 54-30 Monday. Start times for the three other championship games were dependent on the results of yesterday's Division 1 semifinal games. Division 1 volleyball Boys' volleyball Division 1 semifinals are scheduled for today in both senior and junior competition. In senior, Oakville Trafalgar will host Christ the King and Holy Trinity will be home to the Assumption Crusaders. The Red Devils beat the M.M. Robinson Rams 2-0 in quarter-final play Friday, while Trinity edged Loyola 2-1. In junior, Oakville Trafalgar will visit Loyola and Iroquois Ridge will travel to Georgetown. All four teams posted 2-1 wins over their respective opponents in Friday's quarter-finals. Division 2 volleyball Division 2 semifinals were contested yesterday. Aquinas was home to Milton and the Lester B. Pearson Patriots visited the Acton Bearcats in senior, while White Oaks MILTON hosted Corpus Christi and Aquinas entertained Milton in junior.
