www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday October 18, 2008 - 27 Triumphant on Thanksgiving Minor atoms win Ron Wilkins tournament Facing some of the top teams in Ontario, the Oakville minor atom A Rangers went 6-0 at last weekend's Ron Wilkins Memorial Tournament in Burlington to win the championship. The latter victory over Woodstock, in the championship game, needed several overtime periods to decide. Kyle Barrett finally won it for the Rangers, scoring in a one-on-one overtime session. TIM HORTONS CHAMPS: Last year's OMHA peewee AAA champions have started the year strong as minor bantams, winning five of their first league games as well as the championship at the Tim Horton's Invitational last weekend. John Guzzo, Rob Campbell, Elio Capizzano, Kevin Gomes and Mark Gowan coach the team. Titans name derived from movie Continued from page 25 recreation. "A lot of Oakville kids have to go to Burlington to play (football), and if we had a high-quality operation in Oakville I think even more kids would come out. All our minor sports (organizations) operate at a real high quality, and I expect (the OMFA) will too." The rep teams will be called the Titans, a name that has sentimental value to D'Souza. D'Souza attended the same high school in Virginia, T.C. Williams, that was featured in the football film Remember The Titans, and felt the name would be perfect for Oakville's new program. "I like it because it embodies the character of people working together," Hall added. "I mentioned that in our presentation. Character is a great part of what we're trying to do here." So is teaching the game properly from the beginning, which is why the OMFA has brought in ex-NFLer Duane Butler to be the club's director of player development. "I let Bob know I want to start with the grassroots," Butler said. "I'm from Ohio, and I was explaining to him that we learn a lot of these football things when we're younger. You have to surround the young players with like-minded people, and that's an integral part. We're trying to set it up as a large fraternity in the Oakville community." While the OMFA hopes to attract as many players as it can next season, a grandfather clause in the SCOFL constitution will allow anyone who played with the Stampeders last year to return to Burlington in 2009. Once a player leaves the Stampeders for the Titans, however, he cannot return to Burlington.
