On Saturday, Oct. 26, lace up and join the Canadian Cancer Society Oakville Unit in partnership with The Oakville Beaver and Wave 94.7 for the 2008 Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer event at Oakville Place Mall. Individuals of all ages and fitness levels are invited to walk the 5km indoor track in support of breast cancer patients, survivors, and their loved ones across Canada. In addition to the main walk, there will be a 1km Family Fun Walk where young children can follow in their parents' footsteps to find a cure for breast cancer. Since its inception in 2006, Oakville's Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer has seen more than 400 participants walk more than 2,000 km and raise $39,000 towards vital breast cancer research and support services funded by the Canadian Cancer Society. "We're really looking forward to having our community come together once again for Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer. People of all ages and fitness levels can come out and enjoy! It's a great way to show your support in the fight against breast cancer and give back to the community," said Lisa Moffatt, Oakville unit fundraising co-ordinator. This year, the Oakville Unit is offering two fun, easy ways for participants to register and make pledges. Participants can register online at www.cancer.ca/takingsteps and create their own personalized fundraising page to share with friends, family, and colleagues alike. With this page, individuals can share their own inspiration for walking and invite others to pledge them for the event. "Online registration is always lots of fun. Participants love personalizing their pages with photos, quotes and most importantly reasons why they're taking part," says Moffatt. Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer is a pledge-based walk, so there are no registration fees. This year alone, an estimated 5,300 Canadian women will die from the disease. Since 2005, more than 1,400 superheroes joined the exclusive Superhero Club for Easter Seals, raising more than $1.9 million for kids with disabilities across Canada. Easter Seals Canada, a registered charity, is dedicated to serving children, youths and adults with disabilities. More than 100,000 Canadians and their families annually access programs and services provided by Easter Seals organizations. "By raising $1,500, it will get a kid to camp for a week," said Drexler. The most well-known services are the Easter Seals camp programs. In 2008, 22 camps across Canada provided camp opportunities to more than 6,000 kids with disabilities. Since 1949, an estimated 160,000 children with disabilities have attended Easter Seals camps. Other Easter Seal services include the provision of specialized mobility and access equipment to Canadians and their families including mobility aids, assistive technology, adaptive computers, augmentative communication devices and adaptations to homes and vehicles for wheelchair accessibility. Easter Seals Canada has been serving the needs of Canadians with disabilities and their families since 1922, when 10 Rotary Clubs formed the first network of Easter Seals organizations in Canada.
