Other lit fields in Oakville are purpose-built as town recreation facilities with the appropriate buffer to residential areas and community awareness of their presence when surrounding houses were built. Other schools in Oakville do not have lights and manage their sports programs. This plan means less community use with the loss of two natural fields currently fully open and being used by hundreds of young soccer players and neighbours in off-school times. We recognize this has been a privilege and not a right, but that does not alter our loss. The new fenced, limited-access field will be used by fewer, more highly organized competitive sports teams. The spontaneous local and younger community team use will be lost. By condensing parking and eliminating the road to Lakeshore, perhaps more green space could still be possible. SCORA asks those of you who may disagree to visit St. Thomas Aquinas School and visualize it virtually void of most mature trees, especially along Lakeshore Road -- one of Oakville's trademark tree-lined drives. Organ donation could have saved boy in need of transplant As a young teacher many years ago, I had a student (Wyatt) who was in desperate need of a simultaneous heart and lung transplant. It never came. I remember quite vividly as I received a phone call at three in the morning from his mother, "We lost him," she sobbed. It was heart wrenching. He was 12 years old. It was, at that time, I learned the lack of awareness of organ donation. If presumed consent existed then, Wyatt could very possibly have been alive today. The issue, which has continued to perturb me all these years is the following: Often, the donor card isn't even on the person at the time of death. This is the very reason we have been told to let our family members know our wishes. However, hypothetically speaking, even if the donor card is readily available and one has let their family members know their desire to donate their organs, at the end of the day, family members still have the last say, regardless of a loved one's wishes. This baffles me. Truly, what, pray tell, is the point of having and filling out a donor card? I think the whole concept behind the "Presumed Consent" is brilliant. It greatly disappoints me that this is the third time that NDP MPPs Peter Kormos and Cheri DiNovo have attempted to put this bill through. It is my sincere hope that more people will take the time to understand the importance of organ donation and support this bill.
