This year's theme, LOL @ your library this summer, has left children enjoying many hours of fun singing silly songs and reading ridiculous rhymes. The TD Summer Reading Program offers families across Oakville many fun and free activities aimed at encouraging children to read over the summer months, developing their literacy skills and more importantly, fostering the joy of reading. More than 4,200 children benefit from attending this program at a cost of approximately $10 per child. The TD Summer Reading Club is completely reliant on fundraiser dollars to offer its program year after year and OPL is deeply thankful to all our sponsors. Research states our children need to read at least six books throughout the summer just to maintain the same reading level they had at the end of the previous school year. Our Summer Reading Club is an excellent tool to engage children with fun books and ensure that they have ample opportunities to develop their reading skills. TD Summer Reading Club encourages children to visit their library to report their reading accomplishments and become more familiar with various reading materials and meet our specialist library staff. Oakville Public Library staff enjoy their summer filled with children learning and discovering the fun that can be had at the library. As final recognition for their participation this year, children will be congratulated with a special party at one of the library's five branches. Popular Canadian children's entertainer, Madame Buskerfly will be the special guest at this year's Summer Reading celebrations. Describing herself as "A Chick on Sticks," Madame Buskerfly will perform juggling, stilt walking, magic and much more.
