28 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 4, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Alliance promotes tobacco-free sport and recreation T he Halton Council on Smoking or Health is working with community partners on a Choices 4 Health-funded project to promote tobacco-free sport and recreation. "Tobacco-free sport and recreation means that everyone refrains from using all forms of tobacco, while taking part in the activity," says Cathy Thompson, a Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) program consultant. "At a baseball game or practice, for example, all players, coaches, and spectators would not use tobac- co," said Thompson. The goal of this project is to create awareness within sports and recreation organizations as well as in the community of Halton about becoming or staying tobacco-free. Council members educate groups about being tobacco-free and help develop tobacco-free policies. "We're not just talking about smoking," said David LaThangue, soccer referee and co-chair of the Halton Council. "We're also talking about smokeless tobacco products such as snuff, dip, and chewing tobacco, which are increasingly marketed towards youth," said LaThangue. Tobacco industry products do not enhance the game and they negatively affect performance and health. While exercising, tobacco users suffer shortness of breath, lower endurance, slower reaction times, and impaired visual judgment. "Promoting tobaccofree sports and recreation is a one more way we are working to prevent children and youth from becoming, in the words of the tobacco industry, 'replacement smokers'," says Danielle Burke of Crave, a youth group that exposes the truth about the tobacco industry. Burke believes the reasons for going tobacco free go deeper than athletic performance. "It's all about community leaders role modeling healthy behaviours for children and youth by being active and tobacco-free. It's about creating a norm where smoking is not okay," said Burke.
