www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 24, 2008 - 15 Oakville Library celebrates a year on the Go C an you multi-task? With Oakville Public Library' (OPL)s `Libraries on the Go' service....now you can! Imagine how you can maximize your time by listening to your favourite book on your own mobile device such as an MP3 player. Picture learning a second language as you make your way to work through that time-consuming commute or relaxing to your favourite novel, whilst tending to your garden...... OPL is celebrating the first anniversary of its Libraries on the Go service, which offers free downloadable books through the OPL website. Customers are not limited to downloading the audio books to just their computers, transferring them to a supporting mobile device such as a PDA, MP3 Player or Microsoft Smartphones is also an easy option. In the months ahead OPL will also be able to offer downloadable audio books in a format compatible with iPod. The overall convenience of a virtual library has been met with much enthusiasm in the past year, with many library customers enjoying the vast benefits of the service. Anthony Murphy, an OPL customer, believes the downloadable audio books are an excellent way of accessing literature. "I was introduced to the Libraries on the Go service last year and I use it a lot when I commute. I have listened to many books this year, only possible through the downloadable service as I cannot find time to sit down and read. I would highly recommend the service to anyone who wants to read and learn but can't quite find the time," he said. However, it is not just commuters who benefit from downloadable audio books, family members from pre-schoolers to seniors will enjoy listening to their favourite reads through our Libraries on the Go service. New titles for teens and preschoolers are always available and can help nurture your child or teen's interest in reading and learning. The Libraries on the Go site can be easily navigated and promotes a userfriendly interface. For the visually impaired, the Libraries on the Go website offers a detailed `Quick Start Guide for the Visually Impaired', which can be accessed using a simple `help' button at the top of the homepage. Andra Steele, online resources librarian is pleased at how the resource is being utilized by customers. "In addition to being a great resource for commuters and those who are busy, but still crave their book fix, downloadable audio books are also an excellent resource for parents. We have many children and teen downloadable audio books and a wide variety on learning languages. Once customers use the service, they realize just how easy it is and just how much Libraries on the Go has to offer," said Steele. Visit www.opl.on.ca and click `Download Audio Books' to search our extensive range of audio books through Libraries on the Go. If you need help, there's a quick guided tour created by OverDrive, the company that provides this downloadable service for OPL. The guide walks you through the basics, from getting started to downloading and burning to a CD. In just a few minutes, even the newest user can be enjoying a downloaded title and find themselves with the chance to win that MP3 player. Libraries on the Go is a joint partnership of the Oakville, Milton, Barrie, Innisfil and Middlesex Public Libraries that have joined to establish a shared virtual collection of digital audio books for their communities. If you have any questions about this service, contact Andra Steele, Online Resources Librarian at 905-815-2042, ext. 5905, or asteele@oakville.ca. -- Submitted by the Oakville Public Library To celebrate the anniversary of our Libraries on the Go service, Oakville Public Library is holding a draw to win an MP3 player.
