James and River Oaks recorded the only wins for Oakville at the Halton District School Board's Harker Relay Meet at Nelson Stadium on Tuesday. E.J. James narrowly edged Oakville rival Forest Trail in the intermediate mixed 4x400-metre relay. E.J. James' winning time of four minutes, 31.52 seconds was just nine-one hundredths of a second ahead of Forest Trail. Forest Trail also finished second in the intermediate girls' 4x100m, helping it finish second to Georgetown's Centennial in the overall intermediate standings. River Oaks won the senior boys' 4x100metre relay in a time of 50.70 seconds. The victory helped River Oaks finish tied for second in the senior boys' division with 10 points. Burlington's Pineland had 18 points to take first. Joshua Creek finished in the top six in all three junior races but was edged by Stewarttown 12-11 in the overall junior standings. Maple Grove wins tyke title, narrowly misses atom pennant Maple Grove turned in three topfour finishes to win the tyke division (eight year old) pennant at the Halton District School Board Lamb Relay meet at Nelson Stadium Thursday and missed a second pennant by the narrowest of margins. Maple Grove's pennant win was led by the boys' relay team, which won a close race against Sheridan. Maple Grove posted a winning time of one minute and 7.37 seconds, just edging Sheridan's time of 1:07.73. Maple Grove was third in the tyke girls' race and fourth in the tyke mixed race to finish with 18 points, well ahead of second place Park, which had 12. Gladys Speers edged Chisholm by two-tenths of a second to win the tyke mixed race in a time of 1:08.37. Maple Grove narrowly missed a second pennant in the atom (nine year old) division where Burlington's Dr. Charles Best topped the Oakville school by a single point, 18-17 - but it was actually much closer than that. Dr. Charles Best beat Maple Grove to the finish line in the atom girls' race by one-one hundredth of a second to win in 1:06.38- one of four races on the day decided by less than a tenth of a second. The victory earned Best 10 points while Maple Grove got seven for second. Maple Grove did win the atom boys' race in 1:03.00. In another near dead heat, Oakville's Brantwood edged Best by one-one hundredth of a second to win the atom mixed race in 1:05.61. Pilgrim Wood and Gladys Speers had a good battle in the midget girls' (11 year old) race. Pilgrim Wood's winning time of 1:01.37 was six-one hundredths ahead of Gladys Speers.
