The man behind Pud and The Oakville Beaver's editorial cartoons is lately making news almost as often as his work is being published. Earlier this year, Nease was in the news as his work was published in a best editorial cartoons of 2008 compilation. Even more recently, Nease was in the news for lending his cartoons, and talent to the $Million or More Oakville campaign, which aims to raise $1 million to the cause of AIDS in Africa through the Stephen Lewis Foundation. This month, the acclaimed cartoonist's editorial and family cartoons are being featured for the tenth year in an exhibit at Artway Gallery in Brampton. The exhibit of original artwork sees Nease sharing his humourous takes on both the news and family life. The exhibit features Nease's political cartoons, which are regularly selected as among Canada's best by the book series Portfoolio, and his family cartoon Pud, based on his life as a father of four boys. Artway Gallery is hosting the original brush-and-ink illustrations for these cartoons until April 25. Artway is also hosting a celebration of Nease's works on Saturday, April 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the all-day event, visitors will be able to meet Pud, who Steve Nease is the mascot of City Parent magazine, colour a picture of the family from Pud, or create their own comic strip, for a display at Fridge Front Gallery, near Artway. The event is free. Artway curator Keith Moreau installed the tenth annual Laughlines exhibit that includes the past 12 months of Nease's editorial cartoons and Pud comic strip, both of which are seen not only in The Oakville Beaver, but in newspapers Ontario-wide. Artway Gallery is located in Shoppers World Mall at 399 Main St. S., Brampton (at the corner of Hurontario Street and Steeles Avenue in Brampton). Former Prime Minister Paul Martin, former Ontario Premier Mike Harris, and broadcaster Don Cherry all own Nease cartoons. Nease's Pud cartoon was started in 1984, and is inspired by his wife, Dian, his four children, and his dog. Artway Gallery is one of three exhibit spaces run by Visual Arts Brampton. Launched in spring 1997, the exhibit space features primarily group shows of local artists. Visual Arts Brampton is a 22year-old non-profit community art group. Born and raised just north of Toronto, Nease studied history and English at university. He later worked as both a freelance writer and cartoonist at various newspapers. Nease was hired at The JournalRecord in 1979, two years before the paper merged with The Oakville Beaver. In 1981, Nease and his wife, Dian, moved to Oakville, where they've raised four sons -- Robert, Ben, Sam and Max -- and still make their home. Blakelock canvasses neighbours for Cancer Society Knock. Knock. The Canadian Cancer Society Oakville Unit's annual Residential Canvass is underway and students at T. A. Blakelock are lending a hand in the door knocking tonight. All during the month of April, volunteers have been out knocking on neighbourhood doors. All money raised will help the Canadian Cancer Society to fund life-saving cancer research, provide up-to-date and reliable information about cancer to the public and deliver community support services. The 2008 Residential Canvass campaign in Oakville has more than 1,900 routes. To date, only 825 routes are covered by volunteers this year. "We are still desperately looking for more volunteers to help with our Residential Canvass," says Lisa Moffatt, Fundraising Coordinator of the Oakville Unit. Members of the community are encouraged to gather a group of friends or family members and host a neighbourhood "blitz" night. Choose one night during the month of April and canvass a local neighbourhood in teams of two. Each route consists of 20-30 houses. Afterwards, host a hot chocolate party to celebrate how successful you were. It only takes a few hours but it their outstanding support." The Residential Canvass is also a great way to honour a loved one. Dedicate a canvass night to a friend or family member who is currently battling cancer or who has lost their life to the disease. For those who aren't comfortable canvassing, help is also needed with the Residential Envelope Drop Campaign. Envelope drops involve distributing donation envelopes to the mailboxes of homes in Oakville where there are no canvassers scheduled for the spring campaign.
