www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday March 1, 2008 - 5 Pellet gun locks down TAB Thomas A Blakelock High School was on lockdown briefly yesterday after a student was spotted with what appeared to be a gun. Police said that shortly after 9:15 a.m. a staff member witnessed a student with the suspicious object. The staff member confronted the student about what he was doing at which point the youth fled. The staff member felt the gun looked real enough to notify the main office about the incident, which caused the school to immediately enter its lockdown procedure. "When there is a potential threat or safety concern for students the school goes into lockdown. There is an announcement made to the entire school that says exactly that, that the school is in lockdown," said Marnie Denton, Communications Manager, Halton District School Board. "In a very orderly fashion the students and staff all move into classrooms or offices so they're out of sight from the main corridors of the building and they remain in there quietly until the all clear signal is announced." Police arrived on the scene minutes after the lockdown began and arrested a 16-year-old student armed with, what turned out to be, a pellet gun. The school was in lockdown for 20-30 minutes. No one was injured during the incident and, according to Denton, no students have indicated they require the counselling services of the Tragic Events Response Team (TERT). The youth, who cannot be identified because of the Young Offenders Act, has been charged with one count of possession of a dangerous weapon and one count of causing a disturbance. Under the current policy of the Halton District School Board the student could also face expulsion. He will be held in custody until his bail hearing in Milton, which is scheduled for March 1. Denton noted that a letter will be sent home to parents explaining the day's happenings while information will be posted on the Halton District School Board website. "The schools practice these types of lockdowns a few times a year," said Denton. "The kids and the staff are familiar with what to do."
