www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 8, 2008 - 35 Art show benefit at Bean There Cafe The Bean There Café in Oakville is hosting an art exhibit called Sacred Journey to benefit Canadian Crossroads International. Sacred Journey opens tonight, Friday Feb. 8. The exhibition will feature the work of Oakville's Supria Karmakar, who went through a life-changing experience when she travelled to India in 1991 as a volunteer with Canadian Crossroads International (CCI). CCI works to stop HIV/AIDS, combat poverty and promote the rights of women in West Africa, Southern Africa and South America. By working in partnership with community-based organizations in the global South and facilitating the exchange of skilled volunteers, CCI promotes effective communication and cooperation across borders to address these pressing global issues. Karmakar is now giving back to the organization for its 50th anniversary through her art. The Sacred Journey series features mixed media collage work using photographs shot during Karmakar's time overseas. These pieces explore connections to the sacred, in relation to people, nature, oneself and the divine. The Bean There Café, 106 Reynold St., will be featuring Sacred Journey beginning Friday, Feb. 8. An opening reception will be held Sunday, March 16, from 2 4 p.m. at the Bean There Café. Ten per cent of all sales made at the café over the course of three months will be donated to CCI.
