The Oakville Blades broke their two-game losing skid Sunday in Milton, playing a sound two-way game to down the host IceHawks 6-2. The victory was Oakville's fourth in its past seven games, a stretch that qualifies as cold when one considers the team recently went on a 20-game winning streak. "The team bounced back really well against Milton. Our big players were playing a lot better and they moved the puck quite well," said Blades coach Carlo Coccimiglio. Chris Corbeil paced the Blades Sunday with two goals and an assist. Geoff Guimond and Jeremy Welsh also contributed with three-point efforts, both notching a goal and two helpers. Luke Moodie and Dustin Alcock had the Blades' other tallies, with Scott Greenham making 34 saves and recording the win. With top spot in the Provincial Junior A Hockey League's West Conference already sewn up, Coccimiglio said he is spreading ice time evenly during the final few games of the season. The Blades will close the year out with contests against three of the league's weaker clubs (Mississauga, Streetsville and Buffalo), making it difficult for the team to fine-tune its game for the upcoming playoffs. "It's not the same," said Coccimiglio. "We just want to get through these games healthy, and we'll focus on game film and other details at practices." The Blades were scheduled to play Mississauga on Friday, but the game was postponed due to weather. The Chargers are in a tight playoff race and their top sniper, Bruce Crawford, is in position to win the league scoring title, so the game must be made up. Coccimiglio said the Blades are trying to trade ice times with local minor hockey clubs, and hope to make the game up next Wednesday at Joshua's Creek Arenas. The regular season was initially scheduled to conclude this weekend, as the Blades host the Buffalo Jr. Sabres Friday (7:30 p.m. at Joshua's Creek) and visit the Streetsville Derbys Sunday. Oakville will have a first-round bye in the playoffs, thanks to the league's revamped postseason format that is allowing only six West squads to qualify for the playoffs. Shulaeva a winner in first Fed Cup match Oakville's Ekaterina Shulaeva won her first Fed Cup match, defeating Puerto Rico's Monica Puig 62, 6-4 Saturday. The victory helped kickstart Canada's 3-0 sweep of Puerto Rico. Despite the win, Canada had to settle for a thirdplace finish at the Americas Zone Group 1 event, being held in Medelin, Columbia. A 2-1 loss to Colombia on Friday had ended Canada's bid to advance. SPORTSBRIEFS is still months away, but that isn't preventing the Oakville Longhorns from beginning preparation. The Longhorns will hold a prospects camp this weekend in Hamilton, serving as open tryouts for the senior football squad.
