Snick the sixspeed manual into gear, plant the go pedal and, somewhere north of 6000 rpm, a secondary cam configuration kicks in with an erupting roar of power from under the hood, boosting you to the almost-8,000 rpm redline in a rush. I've enjoyed this turbo-like i-VTEC iteration in everything from the predecessor Si Coupe to Honda's VFR800 sportbike and I still haven't got tired of it. The 2008 Civic Si Sedan comes loaded with everything found in a top-of-the-line Civic EX-L plus more, adding to the power and performance package with: · Electric variable power-assisted, rack & pinion steering (EPS) · Helical limited-slip differential · Rear wing spoiler with integrated LED brakelight · Sport-tuned MacPherson strut front suspension · Sport-tuned reactive-link doublewishbone rear suspension · 350-watt 7-speaker AM/FM/CD Premium audio with MP3/Windows Media playback and subwoofer · 17-inch wheels That's about as much content and performance as you can cram into a Civic, which at a $26,680 MSRP for the Si Sedan explains the almost $10,000 premium over an entry-level version starting at $16,690. Yeah, maybe I could sharpen my knives here over the price and highspooling engine that revs in the neighbourhood of 3000 rpm at highway speed and sucks pricey premium gas to boot. Naah, that wouldn't be fair with a hybrid and so many other thrifty and alternative models available in the same lineup. The 2008 Civic Si is little bit of having your cake and eating it too. Still almost $7,000 cheaper than its Acura CSX Type S sibling and a way of enjoying the perks of performance added to the common-sense commuter qualities and best-selling style of Canada's number one car. What's not to like? And it's pretty sexy in Fiji Blue Pearl, too. So much for my rejuvenation as a hard-bitten and nastier car critic. But, then again, I've been checking out some of the Chinese prototypes at the auto shows and they are promising to broach our shores in the near future. Aha. Maybe there's hope.
