www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 14, 2007 - 39 OAK's Samuel impressive at international meet Oakville Aquatic Club swimmer Curtis Samuel had a number of breakthrough performances at last weekend's Paul Bergen Invitational meet in Portland. Samuel set two club records, eclipsed personal-best times in two other events, and was a member of a provincial relay team that won silver. Winning Wolf Pack Samuel narrowly missed individual bronze in the 200metre butterfly, trimming six seconds off his previous-best time to finish in 2:01.94, an OAK record. He placed fifth in the 200m backstroke, breaking another club record with a time of 2:02.36. In addition, Samuel established new personal bests in the 200m freestyle (1:53.13) and 400m freestyle (3:59.15), finishing 10th in both. He also swam with three of Swim Ontario's relay teams, including the 4x200m freestyle squad that broke a Provincial Tour Team record and finished second. "(Curtis' performances) were awesome and well-deserved," said OAK head coach Christy Yaremczuk. "Myself and John Grootveld, the other coach on the trip, applauded the swimmers' performances and at the same time reminded them that this great step is one of many that they are taking as they head towards Olympic Trials in April." This was Samuel's second year competing in the Paul Bergen Invitational, a meet named after the Olympic coach that oversaw more than 20 world record-holders and Olympic medalists. Gervais stars in Guelph While Samuel established himself long ago as one of OAK's top swimmers, Michelle Gervais may be the club's new up-andcoming star. Gervais won all nine races she competed in at last weekend's Dash For Cash meet in Guelph, setting five club records in the girls' 10-and-under division -- including the 100m fly mark that had stood since 1979. Gervais' other club-record swims came in the 200m back, 200m free, 200m fly and 200m individual medley. She also won the 100m free, 400m free, 200m breaststroke and 50m fly. Joining Gervais with gold-medal swims were Perrie Armstrong (10-and-under girls' 100m breast, 50m breast) and Samantha Cameron (11-12 girls' 200m fly). Hannah Burgess, Michelle Carrabetta, Connor Wilkins, Mackenzie Martyn, Jarrod Baddeliyanage, Gregory MacLennan, Ryan Maccarone, Cameron Byrne, David Wilson and Ryan Lewis each won at least one silver. Earning bronze medals were Meghan Clark, Meredith Johnson and Maisy Kent. TOURNEY CHAMPS: A 6-1 win over the London Wild lifted the Oakville novice red Globalstar Wolf Pack to the championship at a recent hockey tournament in Port Colborne. The Wolf Pack opened the tournament with a 6-2 loss to London and a 2-2 tie against East Gwillimbury, but then won three straight games (4-2 over Port Colborne, 2-1 over Paris and the 6-1 win over London) to take gold. Members of the team are Zachary D'Amico, Stephen Kemp, Michael Merrick, Nathaniel Bell, Alexander Christie, James Condon, Sam Gima, Jordan Ng, Zoe O'Neill, Shane Randall, Michael Seago, Christopher Tani, Kyle Toushan, Nolan Wallace-Higgs, Devon Wilson and Robert Kemp. The team is coached by Dave D'Amico, Rob Kemp, Andrew Merrick, Steven Bell, Pete Gima and Rob Randall. Hennessy wins gold on shorter track This year's provincial high school champion in junior girls' cross-country, Colleen Hennessy proved she's not just a longcourse specialist. The Athletiques International runner won the midget girls' 800-metre race at last week's International Youth Meet of Champions, making a late surge to pass Durham Dragons athletes Victoria Samyn and Linnea Sigfriddson in the final stretch. Hennessy, a St. Thomas Aquinas student, finished with a personal-best time of 2:22.47. Hennessy's younger sister, Kelly, also had a strong outing at the meet. The St. Dominic's Grade 8 student placed sixth in the bantam girls' 800m race with a time of 2:51.10, only 8.16 seconds behind what Colleen ran last February as a Grade 9 student. Overall, Athletiques International athletes were nine-for-nine in the personal-best department. Miriana Dimitrijevic narrowly missed a bronze in the tyke girls' 60m event, posting a time of 9.74 seconds. She was also fourth in the 200m race, finishing in 33.65s. Jocelyn Carabott improved her bantam girls' long jump distance by 48 centimetres, leaping 4.14 metres and finishing sixth. She also completed the 60m race in 8.85s. Natalie Hill ran her first-ever club race, breaking the threeminute mark with a 2:59.55 effort. Alia Bartholomew also made her club debut, finishing eighth in the atom girls' 60m with a time of 9.75s.
