32 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 31, 2007 Net results Ice splits games as powerplay falters By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Oakville Ice kicked off the weekend with an important victory over Ottawa but a powerless powerplay has prevented the team from making a bigger jump in the Provincial Women's Hockey League standings. The Ice failed to capitalize on four power-play opportunities Saturday, allowing the Mississauga Chiefs to skate out of Oakville with a 3-0 victory. Meanwhile, Oakville, which is now 0for-15 in its last three games with the man advantage, allowed Mississauga to score two power-play goals in the final four minutes to put the game out of reach. "We've been trying to work the puck down low, maybe too much," said Ice coach Bill Metcalfe. "We'll be making some adjustments in practice this week." The struggles on the power play did not hurt the Ice on Friday as it scored three unanswered goals in a 3-1 victory over Ottawa. Ottawa opened the scoring on the power play midway through the first but Oakville goalie Stephanie Auger would not allow another the rest of the way, finishing the game with 27 saves. "She's our senior goalie and she's mature and confident and that's definitely showing," Metcalfe said. "She's getting better every week." Auger, who played in Perth last season, has allowed only three goals in her last two starts while posting a .933 save percentage. Up front, Auger got the offensive support she needed from veteran Sarah Finbow. Paige Goloubef set up Finbow early in the second to tie the game and Finbow added another midway through the third to give the Ice the lead for good. Dayna Newsom's goal in the final minute of the game sealed the victory. Metcalfe said the Ottawa team's game was better suited to Oakville's style of play. "They're a big, physical team and we play better against big, physical teams than the smaller, speedier teams," he said. "We like the physical play, the grinding, battling for the puck. We like to get the puck by whatever means necessary." As long as that doesn't land Ice players in the penalty box, Oakville should be in for another test Saturday when it faces the Durham Lightning in Ajax. The Ice currently sit eighth in the 17-team league while Durham is in fourth. The Ice also got some good news when blueliner Geneva Kilman was named to the Ontario team for the National Women's Under-18 Championship, which opens Nov. 7 in Kitchener. The 17-year-old Toronto native has been garnering interest from U.S. college teams and is expected to sign with an NCAA Division I team during next month's early signing period. LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER Oakville goalie honoured Cassidy a finalist Oakville's Steve Mason was named the Canadian Hockey League's goaltender of the week. The London Knights' netminder posted a 1.33 goalsagainst average and a .963 save percentage in three victories. He began he week with a 32-save effort in a 6-3 win over the Niagara IceDogs and again stopped 32 shots in a 6-1 victory over Erie. The 19-year-old capped the week by blanking Oshawa in a 3-0 win. Mason, the reigning Ontario Hockey League goaltender of the year, spent the first week of the season with the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets before being returned to junior for a third season with the Knights. Columbus chose the former Oakville Ranger in the third round of the 2006 NHL entry draft. Josh Cassidy of Oakville is a finalist for an Athletics Canada award. Cassidy is one of four finalists in the top para-athlete in wheelchair events. The other nominees are Brent Lakatos, Chantal Petitclerc and Michelle Stilwell.
