www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday October 27, 2007 - 5 Presented daughter with Captain's bars New Patients Welcome! Dear Neighbour, If you are looking for a new dental office in Oakville, I would like to welcome you to consider my practice. My office has developed a number of amenities to make you and your family feel as comfortable as possible during your time with us. Some of these amenities include satellite televisions in each of our treatment rooms so you can watch your favorite programs or you can listen to music on an IPOD with BOSE noise cancelling headphones. We also have the fabulous, new ICUITI Digital Video Personal Eyewear glasses that allow you to watch DVD's on a virtual large screen TV. We have developed a number of special amenities that have been specifically added for your children's comfort including a Playstation 3 with a 40-inch Sony Hi-Definition flat screen LCD TV in the children's section of the reception room. I have recently invested in a dental laser that can treat cavities in you or your children's teeth without the drilling sound or vibration. The Laser treatment can lead to a decrease in the amount of anesthetic that is required during the visit to treat the cavity and improve the overall dental experience for you and your child. I am very fortunate to have a caring and friendly team that are committed to your overall oral health and will make you feel welcome and respected. If you have any questions about our office, please feel free to call us at 905-827-1619. We look forward to meeting with you and creating a long-term relationship. Sincerely Continued from page 4 While work dominated the majority of Smith's time in Afghanistan, one trip to Kandahar gave him the extraordinary opportunity to stand in for his daughter's commanding officer during her promotion to the rank of Captain. During a small morning ceremony in front of the Role 3 Kandahar airfield hospital, in a moment that seemed right out of Hollywood, Smith presented his daughter with Captain's bars. "It was just really prideful and nostalgic," said Smith. "I never thought in my wildest dreams when she was a little girl that we would end up in an operational theatre together." Smith noted that the pride he felt that day was not only centered on Stephanie, but also extended to the nurses that worked with her once he caught a glimpse of the things they had to deal with. "It takes a lot of courage because they see little kids who have been blown up. It's just terrible and they go in there with an enthusiasm that they're making a difference," he said. "I've been through the ward and I've seen the stuff there and sometimes it's not too pretty, but they get up and deal with it day after day after day. I'm not sure I'd have the courage." For Smith, the six months he was in Afghanistan passed quickly owing to the heavy workload that was involved in keeping ISAF headquarters up to date with what was happening in the south. During this time he was able to call his family once or twice a week and e-mail almost every day, a drastic improvement over his previous deployment to Cyprus when soldiers would write a letter, mail it and then wait weeks to hear back from their families. Smith's family enjoyed something much better than a phone call or email earlier this month with the return of Smith and Stephanie to Canada. As Stephanie's deployment began earlier than her father's, her tour is over while Smith has three months to go. His flight back to Afghanistan is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 29. While Smith points out he is not a politician, he has strong personal feelings about the war, believing it is a good cause for Canada to be engaged in. Part of his argument is practical, noting that as terrorists used Afghanistan as a base to attack the west once, they would use it that way again if given a chance. Smith also argues that the people of Afghanistan need Canada's help and that Canada has the opportunity to share some of the comfort we enjoy with them. "Our absolute worst day is way better than the best day of someone living in Afghanistan," he said. "We are so privileged to live in Canada and I think if Canadians had to experience one day of the horror that goes on over in Afghanistan they would see the value of the commitment Canada has made."
