St. Andrew wins three titles at Catholic meet St. Andrew Catholic School led Oakville schools at the recent Halton Catholic District School Board elementary cross-country meet, winning team championships in three divisions. St. Andrew won the mite girls' and bantam girls' Division A titles as well as the mite boys' Division D crown. St. Marguerite d'Youville (bantam boys' Division A and tyke girls' Division A) and Our Lady of Peace (mite girls' Division D and tyke girls' Division B) each won two team championships. See Catholic page 44 BURLINGTON -- For the first 11 minutes, Wednesday's battle of undefeated senior girls' high school basketball teams appeared it would be exactly that. Then the Notre Dame Fighting Irish seemed to shift into a higher gear. Notre Dame used a remarkable surge to seize control of its home-court showdown with the Loyola Hawks, outscoring the Hawks 22-0 in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 38-20 lead into intermission and coast to a 66-37 rout. Notre Dame's lengthy run came immediately after Loyola (5-1) had scored 11 consecutive points of its own to take a brief 20-16 lead. "Our number one goal going into the game was to be competitive, and I thought we were competitive for (most of) the first half," Hawks coach Gary Laurin said. "Then we backed down a bit and they took complete advantage of it. Their defensive pressure was just all over us and they scored off our turnovers. That put us down a little bit and we never got back in it again." Notre Dame coach Mike Johnson said his team didn't make any tactical changes to key the run, but instead picked up its intensity. "That's the best we've played all year," said Johnson, whose squad improved to 60 in Halton league play. "We brought defensive intensity, played inside and out, and got the transition game going. We were clicking on all cylinders there for a bit." A pair of Grade 10 students, Jamie Ruttle and Missy Mullins, spearheaded the Irish's second-quarter run. Ruttle utilized her height advantage to convert lay-ups from close range and create second-chance opportunities with offensive rebounds, while Mullins attacked the basket from the perimeter to score 10 first-half points. "We took our time and passed it around, and looked to me when I was open," said the 15-year-old Ruttle, who led all scorers with 24 points. Cara Cutaia was third in scoring for the Irish, netting seven points. Alex Pecar countered for Loyola with 13 points. Jenn O'Brien added nine and Ashara Cadogan had four for the Hawks. Loyola will be put to the test again when the season continues next week. The Hawks will be home to the 3-2 Abbey Park Eagles Monday and then visit the 6-0 Holy Trinity Titans Wednesday.
