People like Macey. When Macey entered the Halton Trauma Centre's Assessment and Treatment Program at the age of nine, her pain was obvious. After her mother abandoned the family when she was just six, her father began a cycle of abuse that lasted three years. When she first arrived at the Centre, Macey would suddenly retreat from sessions, afraid and confused. Her interactions with other children were strangely adult and sadly inappropriate. The challenge was to teach her how to be a nine-year-old again. Macey's progression was slow. Through effective therapy and treatment, she learned how to trust again and to come to terms with her pain. Today, Macey lives with her new foster family in a loving and caring environment. The cycle of abuse has finally been broken. Halton Trauma Centre provided her with an opportunity to be a child and have a real chance at a bright and productive life. Last year in Ontario, more than 29,000 children were abused or neglected. This alarming statistic seems all the more shocking because child abuse is often an invisible plague. Many children in our community are suffering, but the abuse is not always apparent. In 2006, Halton Trauma Centre provided critical assessment and treatment to more than 200 individuals and families right here in Oakville. October is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a month to highlight the urgent need to stop the abuse and to appeal to every member of community to do their part to protect children from abuse by reporting suspected cases. Halton Trauma Centre is one of 31 local health and social service agencies funded by United Way of Oakville (UWO). In addition to being a major fund provider, UWO offers professional development workshops to staff and volunteers in the non-profit sector. United Way's fall campaign is now underway with a goal of investing $2.25 million in the community in 2008.
