www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 12, 2007 - 35 Knowledge is the cure By Maleigha Ford GRADE 11, T. A. BLAKELOCK www.oakvillebeaver.com The Regional T here is enough evidence that cancer exists in the world, and we all share the same hatred towards it. It affects everyone directly or indirectly. If I were to ask, "How important is it to find a cure for cancer?" everyone would respond with "very." Then if I were to ask, "What are you going to do about it?" the majority would respond with a mumble and a shrug. It's easy to have an opinion, but actions speak louder than words. On Sept. 29, the YMCA of Burlington hosted a benefit concert to promote the fight against cancer, and all proceeds went to cancer research. This night was dedicated towards exposing the adolescents of the community to the fight against cancer. Inspiring today's youth to join the fight. Silverstein, among many other bands, played and got the crowd not only listening to their music, but listening to the message as well. When an amazing band that you love is fighting a cause, you are more likely to listen to what they are saying to you. Silverstein ended the night and was definitely the grand finale. They played some songs from their new CD and some old classics like "My heroine." The crowd loved them and called them back for three encores. All proceeds from the merchandise being sold went to cancer research. As I looked through all the stands I noticed one specific shirt that said, "4.8 million people die each year from smoking, and the cure is knowl- edge." This shirt stuck out to me not only because of the genetically blessed guy behind the stand, but the words. The shirt was right. If people knew what smoking does to you, then maybe they could fight against it. If they knew the numbers maybe they would be less urged to light up again. Looking back on that night I will always remember the bruises I got from the mosh pit, the loud music that rang in my ears for two days and the influence that the concert had on me. I thought I was just going there to see my favourite band Silverstein play, but I also learned that cancer does affect everyone in some way and we have to do something about it. I know next time I am asked what I am going to do about cancer, I will not respond with a mumble and a shrug. I will respond with: "Making people aware about the affects cancer has on people, supporting and participating in fundraisers like benefit concerts and having the knowledge that smoking kills. And we have to do something about it."
