Be a Voice for Affordable Housing contest to raise awareness about the need for more affordable housing in Halton. Students in Grades 1012 from the Halton District School Board and the Halton Catholic District School Board are invited to develop an entry of their choice such as a video, a song or a poster that best captures why Halton needs more affordable housing. "The goal behind the contest is to get our young people engaged in their community and introduce the concept of the need for more affordable housing," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. "If we want our youth to be contributing members of our community for many years to come, we will need housing options they can afford." Prizes will be awarded to students whose entry best depicts why Halton needs more affordable housing. Entries will be judged by an independent panel of judges consisting of representatives from the Catholic and public school boards, local community agencies and the media. The grand prize winner will receive $500, runner up- $250 and four honourable mentions will get $100 each. Winners will be announced and all entries will be on display at an awards ceremony on Nov. 21. In 2006, Regional Council adopted a Comprehensive Housing Strategy for Halton. A key component of the strategy includes building awareness and acceptance of the need for affordable housing in Halton. A 2005 Ipsos-Reid survey on housing attitudes and experiences found awareness of the need for affordable housing was very low among residents of Halton. "Affordable housing is critical to creating healthy communities in Halton," added Carr.
