www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 31, 2007 - 5 Cops help kids get safe start Halton Police will kick into a high enforcement, educational traffic initiative called Safe Start as of Monday. The project will continue through the first days of school until Friday, Sept. 14. The project, which started last year, will again be undertaken to remind the driving public of the need to be courteous to other drivers and children, particularly when kids are making their way back to school. The project will be a regional response utilizing the District Response Enforcement Units and District Patrol officers. It will maximize the effect of the project by ensuring that every available officer is focusing attention on this initiative. The officers will be focusing on the five "Ss": · Speeding · Seatbelts · Stop signs · School zones · School buses. Officers will be focusing their attention on these areas to ensure that the driving public pays attention to the rules of the road, now and throughout the year. This project is an ongoing initiative that will be maintained year round. Initial efforts are dubbed Safe Start as the project is being kicked off when children return to school. Future initiatives will ensure that focus is maintained throughout the year. The project aims to encourage compliance with the Province's legislated driving laws to ensure a safer driving and pedestrian environment. Think Green. Be Cool. Breath Easy. CASH BACK End of summer poses greatest risk Continued from page 1 As mosquitoes are most active and likely to bite from early evening to morning, Halton Region also recommends residents stay indoors during these times. Attacking the mosquito's ability to breed by draining any areas of standing water is another method Halton Region recommends residents undertake to combat the spread of the West Nile Virus. This includes regularly changing the water in birdbaths and emptying rain barrels weekly. Removing old tires, turning over pails, toys, wheelbarrows and keeping eaves troughs clear will also reduce the number of mosquitoes in an area. So far this season there have been no human cases of West Nile Virus in Halton, but as in the past, August and September are considered the months where humans face the greatest risk of infection.
