www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday August 25, 2007 - 15 Your trash could be pet's demise Many pet owners have experienced the stress of finding the contents of a garbage bag or bin strewn all over their home, courtesy of an inquisitive or hungry pet. While great effort is often spent preventing wildlife from breaking into trash cans and garbage placed outdoors, attention should also be placed on the safety of domestic animals. Trash that's accessible in any location spells trouble for household pets. "Garbage can cause a number of problems with pets," noted Heather White, Outreach and Education Manager at the Oakville & District Humane Society. "It's important to keep all waste securely covered and even locked away to prevent persistent pets from gaining access." Items such as meat and poultry bones, plastic, metal or paper can cause choking, trauma to the gastrointestinal tract or even lead to a life-threatening intestinal blockage. Emergency surgery may be required to remove the unwanted obstruction. In addition to the threat of physical obstruction, if consumed, bacteria and toxic producing moulds on spoiled and rotting food are hazardous to a pet's health. "Spoiled food can harbour millions of bacteria," noted White, "which can lead to food poisioning or a condition known as bacterial enteritis, which causes intestinal tract irritation and inflammation resulting in bloating of the abdomen, vomiting and diarrhea." Toxins from moulds affect the nervous system. In certain rotting foods, such as cheese, nuts, grains and pasta, some moulds can produce substances known as tremorgenic mycotoxins. These toxins cause muscle tremors or even seizures that can become lifeSOLD SOLD SOLD Just Moved? SOLD threatening. Household items can also potentially poison a pet. The most common toxic hazards found in trash include medications, harmful foods like onions and coffee grounds, poisonous plant cuttings and chemicals such as household cleaners, insecticides or batteries. Ingestion of these substances can produce a wide range of effects. "Muscous membranes and the gastrointestinal tract can become irritated when household toxins are consumed," noted White. "They can also pose the threat of seizures or damage to vital organs such as the heart, kidneys or liver. No pet should have to experience any of these repercussions simply because the trash was not kept out of reach." Preventative measures are the best way to keep pets safe. Secure all garbarge away from your pet's reach. Child locks on doors may be helpful. In the event that your pet does consume trash, you should contact your veterinarian immediately to determine what next steps should be taken. Bride-To-Be? New Baby?
