www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 22, 2007 - 17 Black Tie & Golf Shoes tourney is gala fundraiser for Red Cross By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER "The program is not well known, but it offers tremendous support The Aug. 24 Halton Red Cross' Black Tie and Golf Shoes to local residents in fundraising event is a dream to emergency situations, such remember. as fires and excavations." Just ask the bevy of participants over the past 15 years who have enjoyed this one-ofa-kind affair, golfing at Glen Abbey, enjoying gourmet dining, and dancing in a gala evening at the Oakville Conference Centre. The opportunity to play 18 holes of golf at Glen Abbey Golf Club (7:30 a.m to noon) including breakfast, lunch, post-game snacks and beverages, and on-course contests is followed at 6 p.m. by cocktails, gourmet dinner with wine and a live band. The cost for one round of golf and two gala tickets is $750. In the span of 15 years the dedicated volunteers of the Oakville branch of the Red Cross who have organized this annual event have raised more than $465,000. Proceeds from this year's golf and gala will support the Disaster Management program Lisa Natale, fund development manager Halton Red Cross of the Canadian Red Cross. "The program is not well known, but it offers tremendous support to local residents in emergency situations, such as fires and evacuations," said Lisa Natale who is the Halton branch's fund development manager. After the media headlines about gas explosions, floods and devastating disasters fade, Red Cross volunteers remain on the scene, helping thousands of affected people living in Ontario. They provide shelter, clothing, food, first aid and emotional support. "This year alone, Canadian Red Cross Disaster Management volunteers in the Halton Region have responded many times to house and apartment building fires within our very own communities of Oakville, Burlington and Milton," said Natale. And Red Cross volunteers in Halton are often parachuted into other areas to help, assisting those affected by the recent spate of forest fires in British Columbia and previously in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit. To meet demands for this service Ontario must train 3,000 new volunteers over the next two years. It costs $1,500 per volunteer to do this. "They are extraordinary people doing extraordinary things," added Natale. Disaster Management volunteers also run workshops on what to do before, during and after an emergency for families, companies, community organizations, schools and social groups free of charge. Team registrations, sponsorship opportunities and galaonly tickets for the Aug. 24 Black Tie & Golf Shoes event are still available for purchase.
