"If a tree can be saved, it should be." Marianne Hawthorne, Oakville resident FREE! 1446 Wallace Rd., Oakville, ON 905-825-4256 www.onthespotcleaning.ca The Town of Oakville's Property Standards Committee has granted a reprieve to an historic willow tree planted more than 60 years ago by a local soldier heading off to fight in the Second World War. The Town had ordered the 22metre tall tree to be chopped down, fearing its ill health made it a hazard. But following a tree safety analysis conducted by a Mississaugabased urban forestry consultant, the Town committee has agreed to allow the tree to be pruned instead of removed. Philip van Wassenaer, of Urban Forest Innovations Inc., provided the Town with a report detailing the results of various tests undertaken to determine the tree's likelihood of falling, breaking or becoming uprooted. In addition to a visual inspection, the company used a variety of equipment to simulate wind force and test the tree's elasticity and root strength. Based on von Wassenaer's recommendations, the Town has ordered the top 4.3 metres of the willow tree to be pruned, but won't force homeowner Angele Kazlauskas to remove it. Kazlauskas, a local dentist, has admitted she has neglected the tree in recent years. Along with the death of her husband following several years in the hospital, she has also dedicated much of her time to making extended visits to Lithuania, where she provides free dental service for the needy. However, Kazlauskas has committed to having the tree, which she describes as the centrepiece of her large Chartwell Road property, pruned in the next 30 days. She is also hoping to be able to locate the veteran who planted the tree. About 10 years ago, he visited her home to see the tree and relate the story about planting it just before heading off to the war. Joyce Burnell, who spearheaded last year's campaign to save the large oak tree on Bronte Road and wrote about the tree's history, has done some research into the story. She believes the soldier may have been a member of the Gregory family, which lived and operated a local movie theatre in the area for more than a decade around that time period. Following Thursday's hearing at the town, Kazlauskas and her supporters expressed relief that the life of the willow tree had been spared. "If a tree can be saved, it should be," said Marianne Hawthorne, a friend and former dental patient of Kazlauskas'. Welcome to Spice Your Kitchen.
