Title-winning tykes SILVER: The Oakville Sting under-10 girls' select soccer team recently reached the championship game in an Owen Sound tournament. U10 Sting reaches Owen Sound final The Oakville Sting under-10 girls' select team went undefeated during the qualifying round to earn a finalist showing at a recent soccer tournament in Owen Sound. Oakville earned a berth in the championship game after finishing first in its division, allowing only two goals, in preliminary round action. The Sting then scored the opening goal in the final, as Nicolina Racijevic converted on a corner kick, but could not hold the lead as the Etobicoke Stallions scored three unanswered goals for a 3-1 win. Kiah Francis, Emily Osborn and Emily Ellis also scored goals during the tournament for the Sting. Also contributing to the finals appearance were Julia Villa, Dana Pope, Olivia Degruijter, Daniella Paniccia, Natalie Hazineh, Taylor Sabatelli, Julianna Zografou and Kasey Fallis. "I thought there were a lot of really good players so I didn't know if I would make it," he said. But Hulbert made a favourable impression on the Ontario coaching staff and earned one of the 20 spots on the team. Asked what he was looking forward to about the tournament, Hulbert said, "Probably the experience of playing with other players that are really good." His coach believes Hulbert will fit right in. "He's athletic, he's quick, he's strong. He's got all the physical tools," said Crepinsek. This season, the peewee Hawks are playing in A -- the highest level in their age group -- for the first time and are hoping to qualify for provincials. Crepinsek said Hulbert has helped the team hold its own at that level. "He's taken a real leadership role on the team," the Hawks coach said. "He's especially tough against the big powerhouses like Whitby and Halton Hills." Crepinsek said Hulbert is an allaround performer, although he is one of the team's key offensive threats. That's something Hulbert prides himself on. "I can score a lot of offence, but still play well on defence," he said.
