www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday July 21, 2007 - 3 STUDENT EXCELLENCE 2007 Halton District School Board honours Oakville students In May, the Halton District School Board held its 22nd annual Celebration of Student Excellence, a special evening that recognized one student from each of the board's 90 schools. The honoured students are representative of exceptional qualities in at least two of the following areas: academic, vocational and athletic fields, self-improvement, community work, citizenship and leadership, or other specific criteria that reflects the school's unique priorities. Among the 90 students honoured were 31 from Oakville. This is the second in a series of pages in The Oakville Beaver Weekend edition honouring these students. Oakville students honoured in the Halton District Catholic School Board's Sharing the Spirit Awards will follow. · Doug Brennand, Grade 8, Heritage Glen -- Doug is a Grade 8 student who consistently shows his talents in our classrooms, during special events, clubs, teams and in his interests outside of school. He is recognized as a student who always interacts in a responsible and respectful manner and is recognized by his friends as kind, friendly and with a sense of humour. Doug is a valued member of our iMovie group, was part of our cross-country team, participates in all of our intramurals and has been part of our Student Councils. · David Seok, Grade 7, Joshua Creek -- David is an outstanding student whose contribution is consistently very positive. As an Honour student, he approaches his studies responsibly and with enthusiasm, while demonstrating a respectful and friendly manner with both adults and students at our school. This year David was elected Captain of the volleyball team by his peers and is a member of our Environment Club and ECO Schools Coordinating Committee. · Rebecca Rayner, Grade 5, Linbrook -- Rebecca sparkles and shines. She has an infectious smile that makes others smile with her. She is strong academically, has been involved in our school choir and taken on a leadership role in our Battle of the Books Team. Rebecca is what excellence is all about! · Donna Matovska, Grade 6, Lorne Skuce -- Donna is a true ambassador of Lorne Skuce Public School. She demonstrates solid academic skills through her inclass work, is highly involved in co-curricular activities, sporting teams, is Student Council Prime Minister and has strong relationships with peers and adults in the school. Donna performs a wide variety of leadership functions at the school, indicaand social tasks. She is involved in many of Montclair's activities and frequently inspires others to volunteer their time in the community. Hilary is an example of a leader who leads by example. · Lauren Redmond, Grade 6, Munn's -- Lauren has consistently impressed our school community with her kindness and big heart. Lauren's strong academic performance, willingness to always lend a hand and empathic nature are the ingredients of a positive citizen. What has impressed us most about Lauren is her ability to persevere and never give up. · Marsha McLeod, Grade 8, New Central -- Marsha is an enthusiastic and highly dedicated student who exemplifies all the qualities associated with this award. She is an honour student, treasurer of the Student Council and member of many extra-curricular activities, including the New Central band, vocal ensemble, yearbook committee and volleyball team. Marsha's participation in these activities is marked by consideration for others and a positive manner of leading, resulting in genuine respect and affection from her peers. · Marcus Papin, Grade 5, Oakwood -- Marcus was selected because of the outstanding qualities that he portrays in academics, volunteering, self-improvement, citizenship and student leadership. Marcus is a conscientious student who works hard to achieve his goals, whether it's in sports or leadership roles around the school. · Caitlin Reid, Grade 8, Pilgrim Wood -- Caitlin is a dedicated student who always puts fort her best effort. She is thoughtful, kind and well liked by her peers and teachers. In Caitlin's academic career she has always sought to be outstanding, while in her relationships with others she has always sought to be good friend. Caitlin is respectful and conducts herself with integrity on a daily basis. · Kaminda Musumbulwa, Grade 8, West Oak -- Kaminda has only been at West Oak for two years, but since she has been here, she has participated in the following: Student Council, Athletic Council, band, volleyball, basketball, cross country, track and field, Silver Birch and Red Maple reading clubs and Yearbook and Graduation Committee. She respects the Tribes Agreements and is excited to be part of the few Living Schools in Ontario. Kaminda is glad to have met so many great people that have made her elementary school experience so enjoyable.
