4- The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 11, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Two residents named to Order of Canada Tom Cochrane and John Barry French to receive Canada's highest civilian award Two Oakville residents are among 71 Canadians receiving appointments this year to Canada's highest civilian honour, the Order of Canada. At the 40th anniversary celebration of the Order of Canada's creation, singer/ songwriter Tom Cochrane and aerospace studies professor John Barry French will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to Canada and the world. Cochrane is being appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, which recognizes a lifetime of achievement and merit of a high degree, especially in service to Canada or humanity at large. The Governor General Michaelle Jean chose him for this honour not only for his musical talents, which included the international hit Life is a Highway, but also for his humanitarian work. Cochrane has raised awareness of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa and in the wake of the December 2005 tsunami spearheaded a telethon that raised more than $4 million for tsunami survivors. A Canadian spokesperson for World Vision and the Make Poverty History Campaign, Cochrane continues to visit some of the most desperate places on earth seeking to improve the lives of those in need. The reasons the Governor General chose to honour Professor John Barry French are no less impressive. Appointed a Member of the Order of Canada, which recognizes a lifetime of distinguished service in or to a particular community group or field, French is being recognized for helping to put Canada on the map in the area of technological innovation. A professor at the University of Toronto's Institute for Aerospace Studies, he developed specialized analytical instrumentation that was used on NASA's Viking space probe. French's scientific insights and entrepreneurship also led to the creation of Sciex Limited, a leader in the development of mass spectrometers, and he has co-founded a company that is developing cutting-edge earth imaging technology. The two Oakville recipients will attend an appointment ceremony that will also see former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and former Reform Party Leader Preston Manning receive their appointments to the Order of Canada. As of yet no date has been set for the recipients to receive their insignia.
