OTMH Auxiliary honours youths Seven youth volunteers have picked up awards from the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) Auxiliary. Six $1,000 Auxiliary Bursaries and the $1,250 Isobel Winnett Award were given to youth volunteers graduating from high school and continuing post-secondary education in medicine. Youths were required to meet certain criteria, submit an in-depth application describing their career goals and participate in a panel interview. The recipients of the 2007 OTMH Auxiliary Bursaries were Howard Cho, Allan Jiang, Yuri Koumpan, Ignatio Lee, Tanja Simeunovic, and Anasuiya Surendran. This year's winner of the Isobel Winnett Award was Heather Johnson. The latter award was established in 1999 to honour Isobel Winnett, the Auxiliary's longest serving member. Winnett has been with the Auxiliary for more than 50 years and epitomizes dedication, commitment, loyalty and a generous spirit all qualities sought after in the award recipient. Jiang has been volunteering at OTMH for over three years. He is a Day Captain and has been an active participant in the Youth Volunteer Advisory Council (YVAC). Jiang has over a 95 per cent average, is on the Reach for the Top team in his school, is President of the Environmental Club and is an accomplished musician, playing piano, clarinet and obo. He is also a member of the Halton Youth Symphony Orchestra. Koumpan has been with the Youth Volunteer Program at OTMH for more than two years. While sustaining a mid 90s academic average, Koumpan has won numerous academic awards. He is an accomplished pianist and has a black belt in Martial Arts. Lee has been with the Youth Volunteer Program since last summer. While maintaining a more than 95 per cent average in high school, Lee has managed to win a Math Tri Ad competition, is co-sectional leader of his symphonic band and an Amnesty International member. Simeunovic is Day Captain to the Youth Volunteer Program's Thursday crew. Maintaining an over 90 per cent average, she is on the Social Council, Environmental and Literacy Councils at her school and is an accomplished soccer player. Surendran has been with the Youth Volunteer Program since May of 2006. With over a 95 per cent average, she is a recipient of the Duke of Edinburgh award, is a Prefect at her school, captain of the field hockey team, an actress, singer pianist and public speaker. Winner of the Isobel Winnett Award, Johnson has been part of the Youth Volunteer Program since July of 2004. She is a Day Captain. With over a 95 per cent average, Johnson was recently chosen as her school's recipient of the Halton Board's Student of Excellence Award recognizing not only academic achievement, but overall performance, attitude, school spirit and citizenship demonstrated on a day-today basis. Her school's Reach for the Top team recently competed on television at the provincial level. As well she is a member of the Wellness council and the Concert Band at her school in which she plays the clarinet.
