20 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 25, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Boat clubs team up for dragon boat race Saturday Five Oakville boating clubs are staging a charity dragon boat competition on Sixteen-Mile Creek on Saturday. Races will take place in the inner Oakville Harbour. There will be heats, semi-finals and a final. Each 200m race will feature boats from two clubs. The event starts at 10 a.m, and finishes at 1 p.m, with a barbecue on the grounds of the Oakville Power Boat Club, 150 Water St. The clubs involved are the Oakville Club, Oakville Power Boat Club, Oakville Yacht Squadron, Burloak Canoe Club and Bronte Harbour Yacht Club. Each club will field a dragon boat crew of 20 and a drummer. The Burloak Canoe Club will provide the dragon boats and coxes. Over 300 including family and friends of crews are expected to attend. Each crew member is donating $50 to charity and the clubs hope to raise $6,000 for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Halton. "This is new for our club and our crew has been out practicing," says Bill Croft, Past Commodore of the Oakville Power Boat Club. "We're eager to pull an upset and beat the paddlers from Burloak." "Dragon boating is the fastest growing water sport in North America," says Jim Reardon, Commodore of the Burloak Canoe Club and a former Olympian. "Our club offers dragon boat programs from the late spring through early fall. It's a sport that everyone can enjoy and was the obvious choice for a charity event involving boating clubs." Start snapping Sunday The Oakville Camera Club (OCC) is kicking off a photography contest to coincide with Oakville's 150th Anniversary . Winning photographs will be part of an exhibition at the North Atrium in Oakville's Town Hall from Nov. 24 - Dec. 6. "We are very proud to be part of Oakville's Arts community and participating in the town's anniversary celebrations," said OCC President Kieley Hickey. "With the support of our Mayor and our many sponsors, we will frame and show 150 photographic images." `Capture Oakville 150' is the topic for the first annual OCC photo competition. The competition is open to the public, but must be shot within the boundaries of Oakville. All entries submitted must be printed on eight-inch by 10-inch photo quality paper suitable for framing and the entrance fee is $35 for non-member and $25 for members of the Oakville Camera Club. The deadline for submission is November 7, 2007. The top 150 entries will be framed and displayed in the North Atrium of Oakville Town Hall from November 24 Dec. 6. Visit http://oakvillecameraclub.com/ for more details. Founded in May 2006 by Kieley Hickey and Bill Smith, the Oakville Camera Club fills a need in the local Arts Scene for a photography group. Meeting twice a month, the club is open to all skill levels focusing more on education, assignments, critiques and image sharing than monthly competitions.
