It seems so. Bronte Through Artists' Eyes will provide just such a look at Bronte as works from more than a dozen artists goes on exhibit. Some of the work is new and available for sale. Other pieces were created at some point over the past several years and have been generously loaned by their present owners. Bronte Through Artists' Eyes is the first show in this season's Art on the Bluffs series sponsored by the Bronte Historical Society at the Sovereign House. This show fills the North Wing and overflows into the historical exhibit rooms to mix with photos and stories of Bronte's 150 plus years. This year's exhibits in the Display Centre highlight the stories of Bronte Harbour. The centrepiece is an internationally-acclaimed example of marlinspike knot work done by Captain Les Pickard, a mariner born in Bronte. The art and history make for a successful combination. Visitors who come to learn about the stories of the area are surprised to be treated to an art show and those who come for the art are enriched by the history. Income from the art shows helps to finance the work of the Bronte Historical Society, in particular the operation of the Sovereign House. Sovereign House opens on Sunday, May 27 at 1 p.m., the same day as celebrations all over town in recognition of Oakville's 150th birthday. The house will remain open during visiting hours until Oct. 21. The first art show will run until June 17 and will be followed by shows that change every two weeks. Hours are Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays from 1-4 p.m. Sovereign House is located at 7 West River St., overlooking Lake Ontario. The parking lot is just at the top of the hill. Celebrity Spoon Race part of Kerr Street 150th festivities Kerr Village will be the scene of an astounding birthday party as local residents celebrate Oakville's 150th Anniversary. The festivities will commence in Trafalgar Park, behind the Oakville Arena, on Sunday May 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Local and visiting celebrities will be on hand to participate in Kerr Village's first ever Celebrity Acorn on a Spoon Race which will take place from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be organized and hosted by Kathryn Kates, celebrity homes feature writer for the Toronto Star and the Hamilton Spectator, with the help of race coordinator Aine Woodrow. The race is being undertaken for a good cause, as the Kerr Village Business Improvement Area will donate $500 to the winner's favourite charity. Regional Councillor Fred Oliver will be present to award the cheque and to present the winner with a plaque and a gift of art from local artisan Bert Jackson. Besides the race the anniversary celebration will include a live art exhibit, an organic farmers market, and a British Car Club antique car show. Free musical entertainment for all ages and free in-line skating for the whole afternoon will also be featured. Children will be able to enjoy the special KidZone where crafts and musical activities wait for them. The YMCA of Oakville Day Camp and the Manchester United Soccer School will also be running events throughout the afternoon. Refreshments in the form of free cake, pizza, hot dogs and sausages will be provided as well as other foods which will be available for purchase. Kerr Village's own John Marlatt, co-owner of The Moonshine Café, will be on hand to add to the entertainment as will special headliners Aaron Griggs and Mark Bird Stafford. Children are being encouraged to participate in a special colouring contest for which colouring sheets can be downloaded from www.kerrvillagebia.ca. A number of local celebrities have already confirmed that they will be in attendance. These include 1050 CHUM radio personalities The Wine Ladies - Susanne Seelig-Mense and Georgia Mense-Chase, CHUM FM's Taylor Kaye, entertainers Tajja Isen, Nissae Isen, Patti Jannetta, Brian Byrne, Adam Braizer and actor/producer Shawn Reynolds. Television personalities Bryan Baeumler of HGTV, Amber MacArthur of CP24 and CityTV, Mohit Rajhans of OMNI TV, Paul Bliss of CTV, Diane Swain of CBC and Darryl Konynenbelt of Global TV will also be in attendance.
