www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 23, 2007 - 29 Spring Showcase features renowned Cuban dancer A special guest dancer will accompany the Oakville School of Dance and the Oakville Ballet Company for the school's Spring Showcase. On Friday, in addition to professionals from the Oakville Ballet Company and dancers from the professional division of the Oakville School of Dance, audiences will be treated to two pieces by internationally renowned Cuban contemporary dancer, Jose Carret. "He is the first international guest artist that the Oakville School of Dance ever had," said guest dance teacher, Mercedes Bernardez, who has been with the local ballet school since 2000. "He's here to perform, to choreograph and to teach. He's a unique, Afro-Cuban modern dancer. "He came as a guest artist to give his unique style and expertise to the school and to the Oakville audiences." Carret, who has received many dance awards, will perAfro-Cuban modern dance workshop, which is open to anyone interested. He'll also be teaching at the Oakville School of Dance's summer program, and will teach conditioning classes for dancing and offer a Latin dance class. On Saturday, May 26, the Oakville Ballet Company and the Oakville School of Dance 110 dancers will perform in the Spring Evening of Dance. There will be two shows, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and dancers will perform the comic ballet, La Fille Mal Gardee. National Ballet of Canada soloist Etienne Lavigne will dance in both the Friday and Saturday performances. Lavigne has been dancing with the Oakville Ballet Company for years. He's an artistic director in the company, Bernardez says, and is in Canada for a second time to perform and offer his expertise.
