This week has witnessed the construction of a recycled steel `Green Home' developed by TCMP Industries. A small crew of workers utilizing a crane placed the first wall onto the foundation Monday. The home is being built at the Kaneff Development site on Blackbird Court, near West Oak Trails Blvd. and Third Line. Spectators gathered to watch along side Ernie Bodnar, President of TCMP as the pre-made walls were hoisted into place and bolted down. "It's pretty exciting," said Bodnar. "I'm going to live in it for a while. The house is going to be used as a demo so people can come out to see the technology." The walls using Bodnar's ThermAlloy panel technology were constructed at his factory in Burlington, and brought to site by transport trucks. Although Bodnar has already built homes using this technology across the globe, he feels it's important to show the viability of using the technology to build upscale homes in communities such as Oakville. "Whatever the homes you see around here that are constructed from lumber, we can duplicate at probably 10 to 15 per cent less," said Bodnar. "And at the end of the day, the homes will be earthquake proof, hurricane proof, fire proof and thermally efficient. Plus, it is a green home, this is all recycled material." While the house being constructed in Oakville has a foundation, Bodnar says future homes will not even require that. It will be a matter of packing in gravel at the building site and lowering the walls onto it. Currently, the technology allows for construction of structures up to eight storeys high, while being completely selfsupporting. The near future will see structures of up to 12 storeys high being constructed with the technology. "It will be the world's largest fully automated pre-cast plant," said Bodnar. "It's all robotics and computer controlled. There are only 10 people needed to operate the whole factory, and they'll produce roughly 3-4 million square meters of wall and floor panels per year." The factory is capable of producing the materials to construct a total of 14 villas per day. Bodnar believes that the speed of construction, along with the reduced cost of on-site labour, will change the construction industry. Back in Oakville, when construction of the home is completed tomorrow, it will be a single-storey bungalow with a finished basement.
