Now that spring has finally arrived in Ontario, the parks (I am sure all over the GTA) were absolutely swamped with people and (I guess) for that reason every single garbage can in both of those parks were flooded. Not just full, no, absolutely flooded. People didn't know what to do with their garbage anymore and actually started to just throw it next to the cans, which then started to blow all over the area. It was quite amazing! Also, I think it's a fair guess that (at least) 40 per cent of the garbage in those cans were water and juice bottles. Here are my questions: · How is this possible to happen (aren't those cans emptied at the end of each weekend-day)? · And more important: Why aren't there - next to every garbage can - recycling cans in our parks? Didn't people (including me) just spent hours over the weekend to clean up our neighbourhoods? MANUELA M. HOFMEISTER Slogan inappropriate Continued from page 6 Merchandising has no place in the classroom I whole heartedly endorse and agree with the letter by Stuart Becker -- Parent concerned about merchandising in the schools -- The Oakville Beaver, Friday, April 25. Parents do indeed have enough challenges dealing with the highest rate of merchandising messaging we have ever seen in history - and the penetration of the classrooms of minors is at least an example of immoral predatory marketing. Further, I have to say I am disappointed that teachers and principles would allow themselves to be complicit in this practice. Other professionals such as medical doctors are loathe to become "agents" for marketing firms, and I would expect that teachers would not want to sully the high esteem in which they are held. My challenge to the marketing functions in these companies is to adhere to a more legitimate code of marketing practice by targeting parents directly, so that we can make appropriate decisions on our children's behalf. To the school boards my challenge is to stand up and tell government the school system is underfunded and that the fine people who dedicate their lives to teaching our children are being forced into desperate measures to close the funding gap. The slogan undermines basic respect in society and I hope you will hear from other parents and citizens who find this campaign and the use of our money to be disgusting, offensive and disgraceful. It is not your right to desensitize our kids to Liberal foul language. It's one thing for a private company to be edgy and provocative. It's their money and their risk, but it's quite another to have the Ontario Government, lower the standard when it comes to language. When children use the F- word in school they can be suspended and expelled under the Safe Schools Act Is swearing in the name of the fight against global warming, going to be cause enough to be expelled if they swear in school or will it be now acceptable? I started driving a hybrid car before it became cool and certainly before the campaign to reduce global warming got going. Our family started taking our bottles to a recycling depot 20 years ago before curbside pickup became a standard and so it's not a case of not being onside with the environment. But the Liberal Government is completely offside with this campaign.
