Oakville Wind Orchestra concert May 6 Canada's oldest continuing concert band the Oakville Wind Orchestra (OWO) will celebrate the Town of Oakville's 150th birthday on May 6. The group, which first performed in Oakville on July 1, 1867, will present its annual spring concert focusing on Oakville Through the Years at 2 pm at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. Helping the OWO celebrate these birthdays will be their special guests, the Circle of Harmony Chorus. The history of the OWO is intertwined with its town band. The early citizens of this area started thinking about a town band in 1850 when the Sons of Temperance held a soirée that year to raise money to buy band instruments. While the soirée was a success, the attempt to organize a band failed. At that time, successful businessman William Chisholm owned the land that was to become Oakville. He built the first harbour at the end of a planked road that is now Trafalgar Road. As warehouses to store timber and later wheat for export were built, the community prospered. In 1857, the small community was designated a town. In 1866, the Halton militia whose members had just returned home to Oakville after defending the land along the Niagara River, decided they needed a band. On December 26, 1866, a ball was held at the Oakville Town Hall to raise funds for the band. On July 1, 1867, while Oakville launched the White Oak, the newest 200-ton schooner built by Duncan Chisholm, Captain R.B. Albertson led a 15-piece brass band into performance. The young Town of Oakville had its first celebration with its own town band.
