38 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday March 9, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Peewee B Hornets golden in London The Oakville peewee B Hornets overcame determined opposition, an opening-game loss and an injury to one of their key players to win gold at a recent girls' hockey tournament in London. After dropping a 2-0 decision to the host London Devilettes in their first game, in which Oakville lost defenceman Megan Watkins to a season-ending hand injury, the Hornets rebounded to win their next four contests -- all of which were tightly-contested. Oakville edged Etobicoke 3-2 to advance to the quarter-finals, where it played to a 2-2 stalemate with Windsor through regulation time and two overtime periods before winning in a shootout. In the semifinal, the Hornets withstood a third-period rally by Waterloo to hold on for a 3-2 win, then defeated Etobicoke 4-2 in the championship game. Isabella Dinadis led the team with eight goals during the tournament, including the decisive marker in the quarter-final shootout win. Other goal-scorers were Jordan Currie (two), Hanna Moore, Stephanie Solty and Alex Thorn. Teagan Rolf von den Baumen, Alannah Magarelli, Kendyl Wilson, Lisa Guidoni, Jordan Currie, Krista Madill, and Jacqueline Hanson drew assists. Defencemen Nicole Collaton and Courtney Sevier played well throughout the tournament in support of the Hornets' goaltending tandem of Alex Abrahams and Colleen O'Kelly. LONDON CHAMPS: The Oakville peewee B Hornets gather for a team picture after winning gold at a recent girls' hockey tournament in London. Local skater qualifies for provincials St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School student Anjuli Dabydeen will represent the Oakville Skating Club at this weekend's Trillium Starskate Championships in Waterloo after winning her 79-skater junior bronze ladies division at last month's regionals. The 11-year-old has skated since the age of two and is also an avid skiier and soccer player. Oakville Skating Club teammates Alexandra Brown and Jade Zeron both placed in their flights to advance to the finals. Other local skaters at the Central Ontario championships, held in Brampton, were Andre Keire, Madison Thulien, Gabrielle Bernier, Claire Segeren, Emma Nielsen, Megan Segeren, Lauren Woodward, Christine Rankin, Ellen Mays, Meaghan Umphrey, Kristina DiClemente and Heidi Leblanc. Snowboarder earns first World Cup win Former Appleby College student Jeff Batchelor earned his first-ever victory on the World Cup snowboarding tour recently, placing first in halfpipe competition at a Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup stop in Korea. Batchelor fell in both rounds of qualifying but still managed a strong enough run to earn a spot in the finals. Second after the first round of finals, he nailed his second attempt to move into first, clinching the title with an alley-oop McTwist. "Jeff really stepped it up," said John Dormer of the Canadian Snowboard Federation. "He started off strong in training but as we got closer to the event, he started to get nervous. He was hot and cold." National team veteran Jasey Jay Anderson may have played a role in Batchelor's win, noticing the youngster's nervousness and giving him a pep talk before the finals. "It was really a team effort," Dormer said. "It was great to see everyone come together with guys like Jasey Jay really supporting the younger team members and acting as mentors." SPORTSBRIEFS The Eagles defeated Victoria Village 6-0 and Agincourt 3-0, then tied Weston 1-1 before defeating Credit Valley 2-1 and advancing to the championship game. Oakville's gold-medal hopes were denied by Duffield, however, which handed the Eagles a 2-0 loss. Oakville goaltender Matthew Whitcombe was named the tournament's most valuable player. Also contributing to the silver-medal showing were James Sasso, Stephen McPhaden, Tommy Hubbs, Nick Shanks, Matthew Brennan, Alexander Williams, Timothy Favot, Matthew Flahive, Nick Angiola, Christopher Severin, Nick Hache, Carson Wheeler, Nick Russo, Matthew Whitcombe, Nick Stathers and Christopher Hache.
