International Women's Day will be celebrated on Thursday, March 8 by millions of men, women, and children across the globe. 2007 marks the 30th anniversary of IWD, which was established by the United Nations in 1977, with roots dating back to the early 1900's. IWD began as an event to draw attention to the plight of overworked, underpaid women, but has evolved into much more as time has progressed. The day celebrates the women's rights victories that have been achieved throughout history, and reminds us of the battles that have yet to be won. IWD also acknowledges the remarkable contributions that women have made to international peace and security. Each year millions of women come together in celebration regardless of race, social background or any other divisions. This year, Canada has announced that it's theme for IWD will be "Ending Violence against Women: Actions for Real Results." The occasion is to be marked by a weeklong celebration from Sunday March 4 to Saturday March 10, peaking on Thursday March 8. With this theme in mind Canada is to take a firm stand in opposition to violence against women, which touches the lives of 1 in 3 Canadian women. Many younger women in particular appear to believe that equality is universal and widespread, but this is far from true. No woman in the world is fortunate enough to have the same rights and opportunities as men, and continual victimization in the form of rape and domestic violence is a growing problem. IWD offers a gentle reminder that there are still many women struggling for basic rights, education, and health care around the wold.
