www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 9, 2007 - 45 Final lacrosse registration Reddick skips rink in Japan tomorrow at Glen Abbey Continued from page 41 Final registration for the Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association's 2007 season will be held tomorrow at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The OMLA continues to grow, as does the popularity of lacrosse in Canada, and the association is expecting record registration numbers this year. Due to the addition of a second arena at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre, the OMLA has been able to increase its membership and offer house league and rep lacrosse to more players. In the last few years, registration had been limited to approximately 700 players in the two systems combined. House league games will run simultaneously this year at the two Glen Abbey arenas, creating what promises to be an exciting environment. Spaces are available in all house league divisions for players born between 1990-2003, and in all rep divisions from tyke (1999-2000) through intermediate (1986-1990). Copies of birth certificates, passports or baptismal certificates are required for all new registrants. Cheques should be made payable to the OMLA. The house league season begins in late April and runs through the end of June, with teams practicing once a week and playing once a week -- generally Saturdays -- at Glen Abbey. All house league teams participate in Gala Day, the OMLA's season finale and celebration of lacrosse on the last weekend in June. Rep teams begin field play in the spring and move indoors for box competition during the summer. The OMLA is also welcoming volunteers and coaches for this season. Canada would then blank the final end to secure the victory. The event was a great opportunity for the rink to get experience, especially since Reddick and Rizzo swapped spots with Reddick taking over skipping duties. "It was a really good time for us to mesh together,"Leachman said. That obviously didn't take too long, most likely aided by the fact that all but Rizzo combined to win three junior provincial championships together. They defeated three Japanese teams -- including two victories of Japan's entry in the 2006 Olympics -- as well as teams from Sweden, China and Germany. The foursome stayed in Japan for a couple of days after the final, getting a chance to do some sightseeing. Leachman said they were overwhelmed by how friendly everyone was. "They really go out of their way for Canadians," Leachman said. "We had a translator and they really supported us. They were all rooting for us unless we were playing a Japanese team." Morningstar hosts training workshop More than 100 students attended Morningstar Taekwon-Do's recent training workshop, held at the Holiday Inn in Oakville. The annual event, in its third year, drew students from across Ontario, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Quebec, as well as from Philadelphia and Aluquerque. The workshop was limited to red-belt students and above. Mike Morningstar, an International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) 5th degree black belt, and Master Pierre Laquerre, an ITF 7th degree black belt, provided the instruction. Both men are former national taekwon-do champions and have won titles at ITF world events. Morningstar went through all of the colour belt patterns and some of the black belt patterns, focusing on the theory and technical aspects of pattern performance. Laquerre focused on stretching and calisthenic exercises designed to strengthen the core muscles, then continued through the remaining black belt patterns to complete the seminar. Morningstar Taekwon-Do students are currently preparing for the Can/Am Championships, to be held in Quebec, and the national championships, to be held in Regina. The ITF Challenge will be held this summer at Sheridan College. check us out at www.oakvillebeaver.com PLEASE NOTE: NO OPEN HOUSE THIS WEEKEND!
