www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 9, 2007 - 17 Celebrate a life through legacy giving For Jay Lockwood, charitable giving has always been a part of his life. His sons believed in this spirit as well and they too gave back to the communities in which they lived and learned enthusiastically. In 1999, when Lockwood lost his youngest son, Christopher, at age 21 in a car accident, setting up a charitable fund in his name was the best way he knew to help keep Christopher's memory alive. He approached the Community Foundation of Oakville to administer the fund. "The Christopher Lockwood Fund uses Chris's memory in a very positive way," explains Lockwood. "We're giving back to the community in a way that helps people remember Chris while at the same time makes a difference in areas that were of interest to him." Lockwood, his oldest son Chad and a friend meet with the Community way. It's a huge reward." The Community Foundation of Oakville (CFO) has a number of legacy funds set up within its mandate. "Legacy giving can also be accomplished through a bequest or planned giving," says Rusty Baillie, Chief Executive Officer of the CFO. "By making a gift in a will or estate plan to the CFO, for the benefit of one or more charities, one can continue to help people in need or promote a favourite cause -effectively forever. And there may be tax benefits to these gifts," he says. "One of the benefits of setting up a fund within a community foundation is that money can be pooled with other funds for investment purposes, to truly make a big impact," he adds. The Community Foundation has the following tips: · Consider using assets for your charitable gift. These include but aren't limited to: stocks, bonds, GICs and real estate. Such gifts may even provide tax savings. · Remember loved ones with memorial gifts. · Encourage family and friends to leave gifts to charity in their wills. · Speak with your financial advisor about other planned gifts, such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainders trust, gifts of appreciated securities, etc. Less than 7 per cent of all Canadians have included nonprofits in their estate plan. Imagine the positive impact on our community if everyone made a donation to a favourite charity. If you or someone you know is thinking of supporting one or more charities through a legacy fund or bequest, consider calling the Community Foundation of Oakville for additional information at 905-8443562. -- By Cathy Carter, CFO Volunteer TI LI MM E IT OF ED FE R! "We try to put money into people's hands where there is a true need," says Lockwood.
