www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday January 20, 2007 - 9 Under Armour bank robbery suspect arrested By Dennis Smith SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Investigators have credited "a lot of old-fashioned police work" with helping find a suspect in the Under Armour bank robberies. Joseph Vrbranac, 34, of Kitchener was arrested without incident by Peel Regional Police while heading to work in his hometown on Friday at 6 a.m. He was taken into custody and charged with 17 southern Ontario bank robberies, including one on Dec. 5 at the Scotiabank on Iroquois Shore Boulevard. Police named the case after the cap worn during nine of the robberies. "The work of all police services involved contributed to his arrest," said Det.-Sgt. Bruce Chapman of Peel Regional Police. "It was just thorough, old-fashioned legwork and a lot of computer work. We did lots of data searches." He said those searches included thousands of checks of vehicles similar to the brown 2003-2005 GMC Jimmy reported at two robbery locations. Vrbranac's vehicle was seized and is being examined by police, he said. Chapman said police went through reports and used a crime analyst to determine why banks were robbed in particular locations, like Windsor and Barrie. "Hitting different places does not help anymore," he said. "Going in different juris- dictions draws more police and they can get caught because of information sharing by different police services." Chapman said Peel officers in unmarked cruisers arrested Vrbranac after developing a lead and following him since late Wednesday. "With police, there is no jurisdiction," he said about the out-of-town arrest. The arrest was announced Friday during a joint press conference at Halton Regional Police Headquarters in Oakville. (It was originally called to release recent suspect and vehicle photos and announce a reward from the Canadian Bankers' Association). Halton was the central investigative body since five robberies occurred here. Besides Burlington, there were two in Milton and one each in Oakville and Halton Hills (Acton). The robberies started in Kitchener on Jan. 6, 2006 with 16 occurring during the last six months. Besides locations previously mentioned, other robberies took place in Guelph, Chatham, Brampton, Hamilton, Mississauga and St. Catharines. All but one occurred at Scotiabank branches. Vrbranac is single, lives with his parents and is a shift worker. Anyone with more information about the case is asked to call Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
