The initiative consists of the Halton Youth Awards for Environment Excellence and the Halton Environmental Scholarship Awards. Submissions for either require an 800-1,000word essay. Evaluations of the applications are heavily weighted on the essay portion and collateral materials, including two testimonials. The environmental excellence awards, which are open to all Halton elementary and secondary school students, provide an opportunity to win $500 for the winning students' schools. The scholarships are open to youth who are or will be pursuing post-secondary studies with an emphasis on the environment. Offering added incentive this year, each scholarship award is for $1,000 -- an increase of $500 over last year's awards. Deadline for applications is March 2.
