www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 3, 2007 - 5 Search for missing man has happy ending Man calls family from pay phone two days after walking out of hospital A man with a medical condition who had been missing nearly two days since he wandered from the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital was found unharmed yesterday afternoon. Terrence Patton, 56, was located by Halton Police in Mississauga at Southdown Road and Truscott Drive yesterday just after 12 noon, said Sgt. Peter Payne of the public affairs bureau. A permanent resident of the Waterford Long Term Care Facility at 2140 Baronwood Drive, Patton suffers from a brain injury that causes periodic symptoms that are similar to dementia. He was discharged from the hospital Monday night after being treated for a minor medical issue, but before he was returned to his residence, he wandered off. "Fortunately, he made his way to a pay phone and phoned his family, and they made contact with us and we got there quick enough that we were able to locate him and bring him back," said Payne. "We believe that he walked there. It's a far walk, that's for sure, but he'd certainly have enough time to get there." Patton was last seen at the hospital at 11:58 p.m. on Jan. 1, Police say, and didn't have his medication with him when he disappeared. After his disappearance, uniformed patrol officers began a ground search in the immediate area around the hospital "We were setting up a full-scale search and staffing allocations would have been increased as was required, but fortunately before that materialized, we were able to find him," said Payne. Patton has been returned to his residence in Oakville, Payne said, adding of his condition, "He's fine. Probably a little cold, I would anticipate, but no worse for wear." J.D.
