34 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday December 29, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Metamorphosis opens at Gairloch Gardens Jan. 27 Ghost-like creatures taken from fairy tales, death, desire, decay and transformation are all part of a show coming to Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens. Metamorphosis, which opens Jan. 27, is the first major solo exhibition in Canada outside Montreal for Montrealborn artist and sculptor David Altmejd. The show features Gothic-type aesthetics with a reference to modern architecture and minimalist sculpture. The werewolf is Altmejd's recurring motif its decaying flesh is decorated with crystals and jewellery, and its habitats are sprawling platforms, box-like rooms, mirrored surfaces and plexiglas towers, connected at different levels by flights of steps, and lit from many sources. This exhibition is the first assessment of Altmejd's meteoric career and investigates work produced from the late 1990s to today. It will differ from the usual traveling exhibition as Altmejd will tailor-make the exhibition to relate to the unique site of Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens. Metamorphosis will literally morph into a project specifically for Oakville Galleries' unique space in Gairloch Gardens. Seen within the confines of a former old estate in Gairloch Gardens, the setting will become a site of experimentation. Altmejd lives and works in Montreal, Brooklyn and London. His work has been shown in Québec, the United States and Europe, and he will represent Canada at the 2007 Venice Biennale in an exhibition curated by Louise Déry and produced by the Galerie de l'Université du Québec à Montréal. Metamorphosis, which is also produced by the Galerie de l'Université du Québec à Montréal and curated by Louise Déry, opens Friday, Jan. 26 from 8:30-10 p.m. at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens, 1306 Lakeshore Rd. W. The artist and curator will both be in attendance. The show runs to March 25.
