Well, there's always the Ford Harley-Davidson pickup. Okay, it's not a bike. But somewhere along the seasonal shift, every rider reaches that personal point where creature comforts begin to outweigh the call of the open road. Usually, for most Canadian bikers, it's sometime in November. And the Ford Harley-Davidson at least eases the rider into winter with the sights, sound, scents and familiar icons that salute the Hawg heritage and culture. I took a test ride not that long ago in a 2006 model, just before the `07's started arriving and following up on my buddy Lorne Drury's earlier review. The F-150 was, is, and probably always will be Ford's greatest strength with a wealth of product to choose from. There have always been special editions to spice up Ford's pickup lineup and while the Eddie Bauer versions and hot-rod Lightning models are off the list for now, there is still a selection of five trim levels, different box and cab configurations, XTR and Lariat chrome packages, the ultimate cowboy-styled King Ranch version and, of course, the HarleyDavidson pickup. The 2006 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 SuperCab was the eighth model to emerge from the alliance that was first forged in 1999. The main theme is black and chrome. What a surprise. The Monotone Black clearcoat exterior is contrasted by a custom stripe that flows along the beltline into `Harley-Davidson' script. Ford claims the stripe is red although it looks kind of orange to me. One of my buddies insists it's pink but I've always wondered about that guy. Not everyone likes the striping, which gives the truck a retro look, almost hinting at Harley's AMF period. But I think it compliments the hotrod styling. Up front, the Ford H-D wears a chrome billet grille and blacked-out headlamps while, in profile, it cuts a menacing stance on 22-inch polished forged aluminum rims, the biggest offered on any full-sized pickup. Ground-effect chrome side tubes run between the wheel wells. And in back, more chrome highlights shine on tie-down hooks and twin-tip exhaust to set off the blacked-out bumper and dark smoked tail lamps. And there's plenty of Harley-Davidson bar & shield badging all round.
