Their time and effort has paid off with many successful fundraisers for various charities and the holding of many festive events. Organized by the Home and School, one of the most prosperous achievements that raised $1,487.13 was the Penny Drive. During the first two weeks of December students brought in their loose pennies and placed them in a clear container located in their classroom. The penny jars quickly filled up and were collected to be taken to the bank. The funds will be used for purchasing toys, clothes and Christmas dinner to support Eastview families who may otherwise not be able to purchase these items themselves. Even the Student Parliament lowered the cost of Holiday Dance tickets for students who donated a food item to the tree. The food was picked up on Dec. 21. Our mitten tree located at the front of the school has an overwhelming amount of gloves, mitts, hats and scarves. We're sure the Salvation Army will greatly appreciate these generous contributions. One of the most popular of Eastview's December Spirit efforts was the Used Toy and Book Sale. The Environmental Club, headed by Mme. LoPresti, organized it. During the months of October and November students donated new or slightly used books and toys. On Dec. 5 classes and the community were invited to our small gym where displayed items were sold for a loonie or toonie. The event has been a tradition at Eastview and this year raised a total of $1,300. Of the money raised $1,000 will be sent to the McMaster Children's Hospital. To share our Holiday Spirit with the community, the school held events, which included an open house and a con- cert. The open house was held for primary students and their families. Parents enjoyed making crafts and spending time with their child as well as meeting neighbours and friends. Mrs. Harild, our Gr. 7-8 music teacher, lead the Concert Band, Jazz Band and Flute Choir in traditional holiday songs ranging from The Hanukah Song to selections from the Nutcracker Suite. The large gym was filled with a very appreciative audience. Even the DPA (daily physical activity) program took a festive spin. Grade 8 leaders taught the younger students a Jingle Bell Rock line dance and 12 days of DPA Christmas routine, which generated a lot of spirit and sweat within the school. As you can see, Eastview Public School has enjoyed the month of December very much. The festivities here at the school created a wonderful environment for the students and staff before the Christmas break. Students, parents and teachers have worked hard to give back to our community.
