Candidates jockey for positions Continued from page 1 Mulvale announced in late April her intention to take another run at the mayor's office, and Burton announced in mid-February that he, too, will take another shot at the office. In the 2003 municipal election, Burton lost to Mulvale by 28 votes -- a count that was finally determined after Burton initiated a challenge in court over the results. The municipal election is Nov. 13. Candidates have until Sept. 29 to register -- and those registrations will be confirmed by Oct. 2. Then the campaign will be underway. Candidates have, however, been able to register with the Town Clerk since January and the list has been growing as Sept. 29 approaches. Some new faces are entering the picture, while some familiar faces are leaving the political arena. So far, veteran Ward 1 Town Councillor Ralph Robinson remains unchal- lenged in southwest Oakville. The ward's Town/Regional Councillor Mike Lansdown, however, will not be running again and a trio of residents have said they want his job. Margaret Mercer, a former Town of Oakville employee and a resident of Water's Edge Drive, will compete against Lakeshore Road West resident Michael Glynne and Hixon Street resident Alan Johnston. In Ward 2, Town Councillor Cathy Duddeck also remains unchallenged, but veteran Town/Regional Councillor Fred Oliver is being challenged by Chatsworth Avenue resident Glenn Woolfrey, an insurance executive involved in the Canadian Forces' Naval Reserve and Santa Claus Parade volunteer. Ward 3 has been conspicuously silent so far as neither incumbent -- Town Councillor Chris Stoate or veteran Town/Regional Councillor Keith Bird -- has announced whether they will seek re-election. So far no one else has put Councillor Tom Adams their name forward to challenge Bird's position of Town/Regional councillor, but Wayne Moorehead, a long-time ward resident who has been involved with minor hockey and minor baseball, has registered as a candidate for the Town council seat. By contrast, Wards 4, 5 and 6 have been very busy. Elgar will be challenged by Madden Boulevard resident Robert Wagner, while Bonnybank Court resident Jeff Gareau and Sequoia Way resident Jorge Urena say they want the Town council seat. Current Ward 4 Town Councillor Renee Sandelowsky has not announced whether she'll seek re-election. In Ward 5, incumbent Town Councillor Marc Grant is being challenged by Pilgrim's Way resident Mahmood Khan. Ward 5 incumbent Town/Regional Councillor Jeff Knoll has competition from Margot Street resident Angus Scott. In Ward 6, Adams is facing competition for the Town/Regional council seat from Marlborough Court resident Marius Frederick, who filed his candidacy in early June. Seeking Adams' Town council seat will be John Hussein, of Golden Briar Trail, Maria Robinson, of Holton Heights, and Milorad Mitrovic, of White Oaks Boulevard. Former Oakville politician Gary Carr, who now lives in Burlington, is being challenged by Burlington resident Robert Plaschka for the job of Halton Region chair -- a post being vacated by long-time Regional Chair Joyce Savoline. -- Angela Blackburn can be reached at angela@oakvillebeaver.com.
